Today's brought me this site:

Know Your Meme

This site isn't quite as addictive as TV Tropes, but I've spent a good long while there. I've snagged some nice new macros, too.
castalia: (Aurora 'fantasy')
Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] deborak. I don't usually post these, but I found this one more interesting than most. I like the artwork they use, as well.

Cut to spare your flists )

In other news, an unusual cool front has moved in and made my area actually livable! It's back down into the 80s now and not quite so humid as it was, so outside activities are much more enjoyable. I spent the day at Harrison Bay yesterday with my family and had a nice time walking along the lake, hiking a bit, and having a cookout. Mm, s'mores.

My boots arrived and they fit rather well, so I'm all set there. They're not quite as tall as I would've liked, but for what I'll be using them for I think it'll be okay. I can always get better ones later on if jobs require them. I still need a lightweight waterproof rain jacket and a daypack, and then I think I'll be just about set for Montana.

Sadly, I'm going to miss Saturday's Who, b/c I'm heading off to Florida again with [livejournal.com profile] shanola22. No Valentine's Day silliness this time, I'm afraid, and of course her family will be there to chaperone. Thwarted again! Oh well, we shall have fun on the beach nonetheless. I am armed with SPF 80 sunscreen and am ready to poke around on the beach and see what fabulous marine life I can photograph.

*off to pack*

So, there's this meme going around. And a lot of discussion in various places. I usually ignore these things, but this one has spawned interesting discussion, so here we go.

This blog-game is based on an exercise developed by Will Barratt, Meagan Cahill, Angie Carlen, Minnette Huck, Drew Lurker, Stacy Ploskonka at Illinois State University as reported by Quaker and Social Class. The exercise developers hold the copyright and ask that if you participate in this blog game, you acknowledge their copyright. Quaker and Social Class is requesting that if you post this in your blog, please leave a comment on their post about it.

Cut for ramblings about privilege, as defined by the above college students for current college students, for whatever value it can have for the rest of us... )

Could never resist this sort of meme.

Ten references I expect my nearest and dearest to get (at least some of):

1. "Do you think death could possibly be on a boat?"

2. "There's a very easy way to define friendship: a friend is someone who won't stop until he finds you and brings you home."

3. "Have we sent the 'Don't shoot us, we're pathetic' transmission yet?"

4. "Please explain to me the scientific nature of 'the whammy'."

5. "Why are you purple?"

6. "Undomesticated equines could not remove me."

7. "So you say a few words. You make a gesture. You remember an important date. A small price to pay for what you get in return. For what you get in return, it's a steal."

8. "What, you never had an invisible friend?"
"I had invisible enemies."

9. "I don't want to be molded; I'm not a jelly."

10. "I never go to the bathroom."

ETA: Wow, that was fast. You guys got them all, even #10, and without a wrong guess among you. I'm so tempted to do some more now.

I could use a distraction from thesis writing, so here we go, meme! Besides, my flist is producing so many wonderful lists that I can't resist participating.

Here's how it works:

You post a topic, list, category, whatever, in my comments section. (examples: "Five Languages Daniel Can't Learn" or "Five Places Darien Won't Take Bobbyhobbes Again, Ever"). Then, in a separate post, I'll post the answers to all your Top 5 ideas, according to me. Serious or fun! Then you post this offer in your own journal, if the mood takes you.

List of fandoms: Stargate SG-1, SGA, BSG (either one), Miracles, The Invisible Man, Barney Miller, Aubrey/Maturin, Jeeves & Wooster, Blackadder, Due South, Everwood, Farscape, HHGTTG, Hercules:tLJ, Hornblower, House, Magnificent Seven, Man from UNCLE, MASH, Gormenghast, PoTC, The Real Ghostbusters, Secret Adventures of Jules Verne, Sports Night, Starsky and Hutch, Wild Wild West, The A-Team. Most of you know my taste in pairings and suchlike; gen is always safe to ask for, the rest probably slash except for Farscape and BSG. If there's a fandom you know I'm in and I forgot it on the list, ask anyway and we'll see.

Happy New Year, everyone! The countdown to midnight clicked over quite uneventfully for me this year, but I got to spend it in the company of a cute Polish guy and some LOTR geeks, so all was well. I have the black-eyed peas all set for when I make dinner tomorrow, so that's one tradition taken care of. Didn't really make any resolutions other than to get my ass in gear when it comes to this damnable essay, to make sure my project is the best I can possibly make it, and to (if at all possible) graduate this master's program with a distinction. A nice bonus would be to figure out exactly what it is that I want to do after I accomplish each of these.

I'm up late once again, and quite bored (even though I could be working on that essay, but my brain is too tired to do it properly...argh, I suck), so here's another meme gacked from just about everyone.

Gacked from damn near everyone.

Name a fandom you know I know and I'll tell you:

1. The first character I first fell in love with
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer
6. The character I would shag anytime
7. The character I'd want to be like
8. The character I'd slap
9. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise

Got a late Christmas present today in the form of the 1st season of Invisible Man on DVD, which I won off eBay for only 8 pounds. It's region 2, so I'm watching it on Christina's dvd player; it's also from the Netherlands, so the Dutch packaging and subtitles amuse me greatly. Can't tell you how thrilled I am to have this show on dvd finally. The quality is fantastic, and the set has all 22 episodes from season one, compared to the UK version where you have to buy a two-part set.

Really, everyone needs to see this show. The love! Darien and his pants of extreme dorkiness, the hair, the SHORTS! Come now, how many primetime male tv characters have been seen wearing shorts in the past few decades? They just don't do shorts anymore, but Darien shows up in them all the time. There's the wonder that is BobbyHobbes, who cannot be encapsulated in a few mere words, but must be experienced, loved, revered. You should read [livejournal.com profile] sisabet's treatise on bobbyhobbes here, then read the other parts to the photo review, then go see the series. Seriously, these two are brilliant. They banter, they argue, they touch a hell of a lot, they casually discuss whether or not Bert and Ernie were actually gay. They refer to themselves as Starsky and Hutch. There are uses of the L-word (the love word, that is, not the lesbian word like in that other show). They're practically married.

There is also an unwritten rule in IMan fandom - you must respect the Eberts. You must love the Eberts.

If there's anything I love in a show, it's a misfit family. Darien, bobbyhobbes, Claire, the Official and Eberts are a marvelously quirky misfit family. And the gland, too, of course.

*watches more, impatiently waiting for "Flowers for Hobbes"*

I'll have more Yuletide recs soon, but in the meantime, a meme gacked from [livejournal.com profile] lornelover. Panorama of my flist, in icon format.

Cut to save bandwidth, 'cos this is a hell of a lot of icons )

Oh yes, I've been meaning to thank everyone who sent Christmas cards. So far I've received cards from [livejournal.com profile] deborak, [livejournal.com profile] writerlibrarian, [livejournal.com profile] artifuss, [livejournal.com profile] cteare, and [livejournal.com profile] daegaer (complete with the usual brilliant bit of fic, thanks!). My mother also tells me a few things have arrived for me at home in the US as well. Thanks to all of you for brightening my holiday.

Was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] krzykat, so here goes.

Ground Rules: The first player of this "game" starts with the topic "5 of your own weird habits" and people who get tagged need to write a LJ entry about their 5 quirky habits as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 5 people to be tagged and list their names.

Quirkiness behind the cut )

This one was pretty hard, though I'm sure some of you will comment and point out plenty of quirks I've missed :P

Hm, whom to tag. [livejournal.com profile] cimmerianwillow, [livejournal.com profile] lornelover, [livejournal.com profile] kitzen_kat, [livejournal.com profile] amedia, and [livejournal.com profile] writerlibrarian.

I am being so lazy this week, I almost feel guilty. It's nice to catch up on sleep, but I need to stop staying up late and sleeping until noon, b/c over here it's dark by 4 or 5.

Freeeeeee!

Just got home from job #2, last night having been my last day at job #1. I'm tired, sore, and I think I've killed my back after a night of palletizing what, if the computers were right, was something like 2,000 boxes, yet this is the best day ever b/c I'm free from that place for good. I don't have to be at job #2 until midnight tonight, so I'm going to sleep the entire day if I feel like it, just for the novelty of it all. Ha.

The only bummer on my mood is this news that there will be no DVD sets available from VividCon this year. *sighs* It's really quite disappointing, b/c although a great many of these vids will be available online for download, some of them aren't, and even having a nice, clear video file to watch on the computer just isn't the same as being able to pop in the DVD and watch the vids on a much larger TV screen with better sound. I hope I can afford to make some of these cons eventually, b/c these days it seems that unless you actually go you end up missing out on a lot of stuff, no matter how many vids you download and discuss online.

And just for kicks, that 2-Variable Intuition Test )

*leaves the computer DLing more vids and goes off to take a muscle relaxant and hit the sack*

Ugh. I was hoping working so much wouldn't catch up to me quite this quickly. Woke up today with a pounding headache and more a little nausea, so when I got to work and they were sending a bunch of people home due to a light work day, I put it down to providence. Thus, here I am, back home and downing the Pepto. I may go to choir practice tonight just b/c I can, then come home and catch a nap before job #2 (I'll go in a bit early, I think, to make up for the hours lost).

Have had oatmeal, a banana, and tea in attempt to settle stomach. So far so good, in that there's been no tossing of any cookies yet. *eyes stomach warily*

My Escapade DVDs came already, much quicker than I'd anticipated, so that's one nice thing for this week. Will have to put a big review post together when I have the time. Also got to spend Sunday with [livejournal.com profile] cimmerianwillow, who I miss terribly now that I'm working so much and don't get to hang out as often. *clings*

I know I've been neglecting LJ rather a lot recently, or at least much more than usual. Part of me also worries about being interesting, b/c it seems like I've been defriended right and left as of late. So, in an attempt to engage a bit more with all of you, here's the latest meme gacked from just about everyone:

The Five Things meme:
Ask me for "top five" lists of pretty much anything, and I will list you my top five of that thing or things. (Assuming that I have a top five, or even any five, of the thing in question.)

So, yes, ask away. I will answer when I have five minutes of consciousness in a row.

Baaaaaaaaaa.

Using my uber-cute wee!Gorbash icon b/c I just got home from working an extra long shift and am going to go fall over now...
