I have learned to make panna cotta.

It's very, very easy.

Also cheap.

Uh oh.

Cake.

I have had a shitty day and have therefore committed cake. However, I feel justified because:

1. Stress. Very little went right today, the wrong things including dead battery on the generator at work, traffic that delayed us getting to our event site, and annoying people once we got there.

2. The cake is made with olive oil and is probably about as healthy as you can get with cake. Or at least, this is how I'm justifying it to myself.

It's an extremely, extremely simple French Yogurt Cake, which has become my new favorite cake. It comes out with the most perfect crisp outside, fluffy moist center, and a really interesting and lovely flavor thanks to the yogurt and olive oil. I adore it. It goes well with fresh strawberries and cream or fruit sorbets (especially mango), but TBH I like it best just plain.

I've been baking a lot of cakes from scratch lately (and mostly taking them to work to get feedback on them so I can have an arsenal of desserts for the upcoming holidays), but this is definitely my favorite.

I wish I had better coping mechanisms for bad days than baked goods, but oh well. Caaaaaaaaaaaaake.

I really need a food icon...

I finally took the plunge and asked for a crock pot for Christmas this year, so I am now the proud owner of a 4-qt Hamilton Beach slow cooker. I'm hoping it will help me use more fresh local winter vegetables for a change.

Right now I'm making this French Lentil Stew recipe with local veggies. I think I spent about five bucks in total for the main ingredients and I had everything else already on hand. It smells damn good and happily should be ready soon. I love lentils in general, so this seemed a good place to start.

Anyone have any favorite crock pot recipes to share? There are about a million and one sites about slow cooking out there, so it's easy to get lost in all the links. I'm just now starting to wade through [livejournal.com profile] what_a_crock, where I found the lentil stew recipe and am busy bookmarking. With the cold weather, soups and stews definitely sound good, and I've seen recs for beginners to start with "wetter" recipes anyway. I'll eat any meat but pork (bacon is fine, though) and the only veggies I absolutely say no to are onions. I'm attempting to be more adventurous with winter veggies this year.

Hrm.

I have pudding in my hair.

There is of course a completely reasonable explanation for this. I'm making banana pudding to take for my office holiday party tomorrow. I need a mixer with a lower speed setting, methinks.

And yes, Bling people, that means it's totally time to break out the protractor. Perhaps a level as well.
