First day of school.

Well, I survived my first day of school :) Today was only a training day, but I learned a lot and am really starting to get excited about this. I had lunch with the principal, two teachers, and another newbie, which was fun. Evidently I'm not going to be exclusively with the special ed groups; since I have a science degree, they want me to work with some of the older, more advanced readers with their science-related nonfiction books. I love the idea of getting to share my practical knowledge of my field and tell stories of my experiences with science. This is going to be fun!
I say, having a job I'm actually looking forward to is a rather novel thing for me. I think I like it :)
Saw The Medallion, the new Jackie Chan movie, tonight with my friend Dan from high school. It was...actually I dunno. Definitely an odd movie. I found some of the humor funny, and some of it rather silly. The female co-star was certainly too young to be Jackie's love interest, IMO. The male partner (Lee Evans) was cute but they made him far too bumbling at times. It was an interesting movie, but I'm not sure it was worth the $6.50.
Part 1 of the Stargate summer season finale is tonight, and looks good. Does anyone know if they'll be showing part 2 next week? Is this the end of the whole season or just a hiatus? I never could make sense of the Sci-Fi Channel's schedule.
I got a lovely package in the mail today, containing a bunch of Sherlock Holmes tapes, courtesy of the lovely and generous
lanning. I can't wait to sit down and watch my fill of Jeremy Brett and David Burke :) Thank you from the depths of my soul, Lanning!

Date: 2003-08-22 07:35 pm (UTC)Doing a job you like. Ain't that wonderful.: ) Sure helps to get up in the morning.
Sci-Fi is doing reruns starting next week. Can't explain it. It's going on hiatus or something. The Brits will have the full season before you do. Me? I don't get any season. I'm a pirate, I download from the net. So when the Brits get the new episodes the US hasn't seen yet (episode 12 and on) I'll get to see them. Tonight's episode is not up yet. It will be by tomorrow morning. One of the reason I love the Net. LOL
Watched Hetty Whintrop (sp?) this last sunday... man.. a very young Dominic Monaghan is in this, cute. I love PBS, almost no commercials.
Made the mistake of getting Daredevil this weekend on dvd. Man, if I ever get another Affleck or Farrel movie please Cas make sure I grovel. It was... yuck...
If anyone wants it. I'm prepared to send it for free. It's that bad.

Date: 2003-08-22 07:46 pm (UTC)*sigh* Man, that really sucks. I hate Sci-Fi. I may have to start downloading as well. Where do you get your eps? Kazaa?
Ooh, I've seen the Hetty Wainthrop (I think that's what it is) stuff before! Dom is so young, and cute.
So, Daredevil=bad, eh? Thanks for the warning :)

Date: 2003-08-22 09:47 pm (UTC)The one review I've read of The Medallion said the same things as you about the love interest and the sidekick. I dunno, aside from Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights, I don't think Hollywood has a very good idea of how to use Jackie's talents. They always fritter them away with lousy scripts and bad editing.
Yay Sherlock Holmes! I just came across some of my tapes the other day and have been planning to have a fest this weekend. I admit, I have a slight preference for Edward Hardwicke's Watson, though. Less slashy, but more cuddly. ;)

Date: 2003-08-23 08:20 pm (UTC)I haven't seen too many other Jackie Chan flicks, but I agree. The Shanghai movies were good (although I didn't like the sequel as much), as were the Rush Hour ones. This one had potential, but some of the jokes fell really flat for me, especially this one sequence where there's a rather blatant "gay joke" revolving around a conversation about "being on top". Wouldn't have been so bad if the Lee Evans character hadn't reacted so horrified at the thought of anyone making that connection.
Really? I haven't seen much of Hardwicke's Watson, so I couldn't say. I'm picky about my Watsons, mostly 'cause I get so tired of movies which portray him as the fat, bumbling sidekick. I mean, if you look at the Strand illustrations, Watson was just as tall and thin as Holmes. And he was smart and resourceful, not bumbling. I *heart* Watson :)

Date: 2003-08-24 01:17 pm (UTC)And ITA about Watson not being fat or bumbling. I can't stand the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies because Nigel Bruce's Watson is so awful. Pity, because Rathbone is pretty good. But Bruce is just an embarrassment- why would Holmes have even kept him around? Hardwicke's Watson is older and a bit gentler than Burke's, but he's still tough and smart and not bumbling. Mostly I prefer his voice; it's very... comfortable. But Burke was wonderful too (when I say "slight preference," we're talking microns here), and they're both so far above the other Watsons I've seen that there really is no comparison. Poor old Watson. Such a wonderful character and loyal sidekick deserves better than some of the travesties of portrayals that are out there.

Date: 2003-08-25 09:28 pm (UTC)I totally agree regarding Nigel Bruce! I hated his Watson. It really is a shame, because I like Basil Rathbone and he was a pretty good Holmes. Your description of Hardwicke's Watson sounds like I'd like him. I think a few of my tapes have him, so I'll be sure to pay attention to his version of the character when I get to those.

Date: 2003-08-23 10:12 am (UTC)Oh, I love that Sherlock Holmes series: just wonderful. Now I want to take the tapes out of the library. ;)

Date: 2003-08-23 08:22 pm (UTC)Oh do, and we can discuss them! A lot of these eps I've never seen before, so having this collection is such a joy. It makes me want to get out all my Holmes stories and have a reading marathon.

Date: 2003-08-24 07:50 pm (UTC)Will do. :) I haven't seen the whole set either as I was restricted to whatever Mystery used to air. Now, I wonder, why doesn't PBS show cool stuff like this anymore?
Congrats
Date: 2003-08-23 11:48 am (UTC)Thanks for the report on The Medallion, too. Now I can happily wait for it to be out on video and not waste any of my free movie passes on it. ;)
Re: Congrats
Date: 2003-08-23 08:24 pm (UTC)Lol, you're welcome. I just feel so picky with movies lately, what with how expensive tickets are these days.
