LJ is going to start using a tool called Omniture Site Catalyst to track stats about their users. These are the sorts of things they want to collect data on:

"what browser you're using, what site scheme you use, your window size, how people travel through the site (what are the common links, where are people going after viewing their friends page, what people are or aren't clicking on"

This uses a cookie, supposedly applied to only 5% of users. Luckily they've provided an opt-out, which is very easy to execute.

Go to the admin console, copy and paste "set opt_exclude_stats 1" without the apostrophes into the window, and hit execute. That's it. Might be a good idea for any fannish types who don't want their adult communities to be part of this data collection.

ETA: Also, since the launching of the new site scheme Vertigo, LJ has decided they are "no longer officially supporting Dystopia and XColibur", and these are no longer options on the standard "Viewing Options" page you see on the main links bar. I know many of us who have had LJs for years still prefer the original Dystopia with its pretty colors and lack of clutter, and I also know LJ has a bad habit of resetting journals to the default site scheme (which will be Horizon now - ugh) whenever it randomly logs you out or has a hiccup.

Had to do a lot of digging to find the link, but if your journal resets or you accidentally change it, you can only switch back to the old schemes by going to this page of viewing options. *clings to Dystopia stubbornly*

THANK YOU!!!!! I would never have known about it, nor how to prevent it. And, NO LJ, you are NOT entitled to know what I'm reading or where I"m cruising just because I happen to use your service. Jesus H. Christ

Yeah, I'm sure it's no accident they posted it on [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz rather than any of the more frequented comms like [livejournal.com profile] news. Sadly, a good PR department could do a lot to regroup and get back the userbase trust, or at least make a start on it, but they just keep rolling out "features" that will piss people off and probably won't result in any usable data anyway. Seriously, 5%? And everyone who reads about it will probably opt out? Sure, that'll give you a statistically significant result. *snort*

I have to echo so many others here, I would have never known about it and I'll have to post it to my journal, too. Merci!
