Stargate Friday!

The good: Daniel in a suit. Daniel and Sam's little back-and-forth talking about whether or not the Asgard was real (felt like the old days, there for a second). Must say, I did laugh when Thor showed up and pretended to be a hologram. Also, loved the scene in Jack's office, with Daniel, Jack and Thor sitting around the desk; Daniel never said a word, just shrugged a bit (hee). I liked the reporter guy, too, reminded me a bit of a young Terry Gilliam.

The bad: I don't really like eps like this, b/c I can't help siding, even just a bit, with whoever's trying to expose the truth, ala Mulder. Once again, SG1 is deciding what's best for the entire world, though I did like that Carter wasn't happy with discrediting. I'm also really glad they didn't kill this reporter off in order to protect their secrets. But I was sad that his boyfriend killed himself b/c he felt guilty...*sniff* I liked those two.

The cheesy: They didn't even try to disguise the fact that the station logo looks almost exactly like the Sci-Fi Channel logo.


Aaaaand, Atlantis! Damn these non-existant transitions b/w SG shows.

Hee. So Rodney's a coffee addict, too. I'll bet Carson's more of a tea man, though. I want to see the battle for the last cup of coffee in the galaxy *g*

I like to see them trying to trade for food, but I have to wonder - if they're going to be trading things like medicine, how much can they afford to trade? I'm sure they didn't bring an endless supply.

Poor Weir. She's the diplomat, but she's stuck on base and is having to rely on other people to do the negotiating. If she's not careful, they'll end up giving away all their supplies.

Poor Ford. Can't take the moonshine, and Teyla disses him for it.

Shep and McKay are lost, heh. And they're already bickering. Too cute. Still don't want to slash them, but they make great teammates. Really, I'm liking the whole team dynamic.

Hm, these Amish people aren't so Amish. And now our boys have been caught snooping. Yup, that's gonna affect the trade agreement.

I know seeing Rodney show off his mad physicist skillz, but really, do they want to be giving these people the means to make atomic weapons?

I'm not sure why this is even an issue. The Wraith beat the Ancients, with all their advanced tech. What makes these people think dinky little atomic weapons will do them any good? Oh well, at least it gives us an excuse to hear Rodney babble on about teh geek stuff.

Omg, Rodney made an atomic bomb in 6th grade? And was investigated by the government for it? *dies*

I like Teyla's new haircut muuuch better. It looks more natural on her, less like a bad wig (which it probably still is, but at least less ugly).

Hmm, smart of Shep to lie and say they only have one PuddleJumper. They all need to work on their poker faces, though.

Eww, the Wraith cocoon their prey if they want to save them for later? They're spider-people! Wheee!

Probably smart of Shep to keep McKay with him. Protect the civilian, and all that.

That little scanner thing has become Rodney's security blanket. I'll bet he takes it everywhere with him.

Teyla's a lot more animated this ep. I think I may actually like her. Wow.

Oh, that was smart. Shoot the guy and bring the Wraith.

Was wondering when these people were going to completely turn on them, and yup, we have new enemies. That's kinda good, actually, having more than one enemy.

Wheee, and Shep brings out the heavy guns! Nice to see Jumpers 2 and 3, though Jumper 1 will always be special ;) And he takes their little toy, too. Good job, Shep.

No Carson at all? What, they give him his own ep and we don't see him again for a while? Not fair! Can't we even have a small scene with him and Rodney? Pleeeease? *whines*

Heh, so Sgt. Bates was able to broker a successful trade agreement. And Shep's jealous. *smirks*

What? We don't get a new ep until the 10th? How on earth am I going to survive until then? Aw man, I hate Sci-Fi and their stupid schedules.

Oh, no, I have them all recorded on VHS. Well, except the pilot - tape ran out so I don't have about the last 15-20 minutes or so.

I'm hoping they won't wait too long to bring the 1st season out on DVD once it's over.

Oh, lord. Science fairs. We had one in fifth grade, and I trotted out the old "play different styles of music to plants and see what happens" chestnut. In my defense, I knew the topic was crap--hell, I got the idea from the Babysitters Club books--so I spent most of my energies on designing a kick-ass poster, with stencilled leaves and drawings of plants and musical notation and stuff.

And you know McKay went to some kind of uber-magnet school. Heh.

In Sci-Fi's defense it is the end of the Republican convention next Friday. Why waste new episodes on a reduced audience - even I might miss it, at least the first airing.

...On the other hand, my tolerance for Bush's speeches is fairly low. I may not make it. <---Insert customary rant about the race even being close with that man in it - a dead cat and penguin should be able to beat him.

Anyway, on more cheering topics:

Me too. And the reasoning for hiding makes me angrier and angrier every time it gets spoken. The SGC has been underestimating the capacity of the population of Earth to be strong and brave and live well since it started. It never fails to tick me off that they have Sam say things like she doesn't think most people would deal with the prospect of invasion and bombardment very well. What the hell kind of history did these people read in school? It must have been minus the Battle of Britain (and several thousand other examples of how people manage to survive and even prosper under constant threat of death).

*cough* Sorry. I spent the whole hour agreeing with every word out of that lovely engineer's mouth. I'm a democrat with a small D and your basic classical liberal/progressive-with-populist-tendencies at heart, and the thing I really hate about SG1 is how much it buys into the idea that you can't trust the people at large and they aren't really resilient. It's so damnned military!

Anyway. Atlantis.

*nodnod* What they should be trading is knowledge, not goods. They have a limited supply of medicine, but they can teach about treating disease, help the people set up cultures to grow penicillin in, demonstrate new surgical technigues... They have a limited supply of low level explosives, but they can teach the people how to mix nitroglycerin into dynamite to use in clearing land. They can teach gun smithing, or how to forge a more efficient plow, or how to purify steel to get a good industrial grade metal. They can help build roads, or design things their trading partners need.

It's what they should be doing. Heck! They've got all those brilliant people, let 'em earn their keep!

Besides, the possibilities for comedy are endless.

Sheppard: "Ah! Dr. Linne! Just the woman I wanted to see."
Linne: "What about?"
Sheppard: "Well, you see, there's this planet. And they sort of need a drive suspension system design and well, I thought of how brilliant you are -"
Linne: "You traded me, didn't you?"

I really liked Teyla in this one, too. Her teasing Ford was cute. They really have a very nice, comfy dynamic, much... I think easier is the word I'm going for here, than her relationship with Sheppard. Heaven only knows why.

This is one misconception that a lot of people are making about the Wraith/Ancient war. The Wraith didn't beat the Ancients because of advanced tech, or force of arms. The only reason they won the war was because of superior numbers and the element of the surprise. The Ancients probably hadn't had a war in centuries, or millennia, so they had no idea how to handle one. Otherwise, they'd've kicked the Wraith into the Andromeda galaxy.

As for whether the A-Bomb's could have destroyed the Wraith hive ships, I'd say it's a certanty. I mean, in Rising, we've seen the damage even a couple of pounds of C4 spread throughout a ship can do. An A-Bomb? Would completely flatten them.
