Yes, LJ sucked this morning. They warned people that it would, so I don't know why everyone's acting all surprised. It's because ONTD got so big they decided to move it to their own servers, and they announced this. ETA: It's done now, so LJ is back up, obviously. Hopefully once they're finished, with the move and with other updates and fixes to handle how big this place has gotten, things will be better.

Y'know, I like the idea of Dreamwidth. I do. I have an account there (that I don't really use, but oh well). But I start to resent the whole thing when I see people flailing over silly little things, as if DW won't have those same problems if it grows to a size even remotely comparable to LJ. No platform is perfect, and down time happens.

You speak truth. If it helps, I really just flung my codes out there because I've had them since the dawn of time and everyone else handing them out reminded me they were still there, musting away.

Nah, your post didn't bug me at all. Codes are good and helpful and it put me in a mind that I too have codes to give away, but I can never be bothered. But all the "this is the last straw!" stuff annoys, b/c really? Some down time? Not a huge deal in the long run.

Except none of that is true. (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_maintenance/128204.html) What happened today was nothing more than a patch push, and it took the whole thing down. They aren't moving ONTD until tomorrow, and they estimate it will take twelve hours. They've also finally owned up to the fact that the problem *isn't* ONTD; they flat-out state in the most recent post that moving ONTD might alleviate some trouble, but that livejournal's problems are systemic: code, architecture, and hardware.

I've been on LJ a long time, and, like you, I have a DW account that I haven't used much at all. Now that livejournal's posted what I've long suspected was the truth (and did so on Take Out the Trash Day)--that the whole thing is a mess from the bottom up--it seems to me like now's a good time to start packing up.

I agree it's systemic, but those systemic problems are why large communities and heavy traffic like ONTD tends to crash LJ every time a celeb does something out of the ordinary.

LJ does suck sometimes, I won't deny that. I'm just not convinced anything else is much better, and I have too many communities here that I won't leave. So I remain annoyed every time something happens. But eh, that's life I suppose.

Yours a few weeks ago was much more eloquent on the subject, but I'm glad I'm not alone in my weird DW resentment.
