Merlin 2x04 - Lancelot and Guinevere

castaliaI really wish writers would work harder at getting their characters into tough situations. Okay, pilgrimage to Morgana's father's grave (which didn't seem all that far away when we saw it before?), but Morgana is going in her fanciest dress and without a sword. Sure. So they stand around and get captured. She and Gwen redeem themselves by escaping but of course Gwen falls for no reason and hurts herself so she gets left behind. Really, I know it's nice to have all your setup done in the first 5 minutes of the ep, but work a little harder at it, please, writers?
Really, Morgana, Uther was perfectly willing to have Gwen executed last season, so what makes you think he'd risk anything at all to rescue her? We all know how little High King Crankypants thinks of servants.
Oh, but of course Arthur is willing to defy his father and go after Gwen. His snarky little reply to Morgana when she's yelling at him was priceless. And then more snark at Merlin. Bradley James was totally cracking me up here.
Yay, Lancelot! He makes things better.
Boo, stupid large animal with rodent teeth who would never eat meat in real life but of course eats people b/c the writers say so. *headdesk*
I must say, the new haircut and scars really give Lancelot a rough, rakish air. It's nice. He and Gwen still have excellent sparkage, much more so than Gwen and Arthur (though they do have some), which is as it should be.
Wasn't very nice of them to tease us with Arthur smearing Merlin with berry juice then skip over the parts where they would have moved past just their faces. Bad form.
Poor Arthur, already pining for Gwen but she's completely distracted by seeing Lancelot again, who she liked first, way before that kiss. Very amused at how supportive and pushy Merlin was about it all. Arthur keeps trying that gruff, intimidating thing and Merlin just laughs it off. Such a great dynamic and I hope they keep it up.
...y'know, I was irritated enough when Gwen was captured the first time, but to bring her BACK after Lancelot did all that to buy her time to get away? I really hate that. C'mon, seriously. What happened to feisty fighter Gwen?
I love so much about this show, but the lazy writing hurts me. With all the truly scary animals with teeth in the world, why did they pick a hairless mole rat to use as a ferocious man eater? Those teeth are NOT SCARY. That animal wouldn't eat a human and probably couldn't, not with those teeth.
*sigh*
Anyway, poor Arthur. Only came because Morgana begged you indeed. Now she probably believes that, sadly. How about you guys let Gwen decide things and see how they progress naturally? No, you'd rather stand around and discuss what's best for her and disguise it as acting nobly. Argh!
But how can I hate it when we got a nice Gwen/Morgana hug and Merlin consoles Arthur by telling him "you've still got me!"? That's right, I can't. Oh dear.
