In Space, No One Can Hear You Say Arrrrr

"Warner Brothers has determined that what its classic 1935 swashbuckler “Captain Blood” needed was a trip to outer space. Variety reports that the studio is preparing a remake of “Captain Blood,” which starred Errol Flynn as a British doctor turned Caribbean pirate, which will move the action off the planet earth and trade galleons for intergalactic space vessels. Michael and Peter Spierig will direct the film and John Brownlow will write it. Despite the seemingly radical change of scenery, Bill Gerber, a producer of the new “Captain Blood,” told Variety, “There are some things you don’t mess with, and that is as classic a movie storyline as you will ever find.”"

I don't know what to think about this. I could be awesome or it could be horrifyingly bad. So much of this will depend on casting. I cannot think of one single actress who I'd say is a modern equivalent of Olivia de Havilland. And only Errol Flynn and a small number of other old time actors can pull off those moustaches.

OMG, this sounds like best thing ever!

Captain Blood was my favourite book when I was little (sadly, I can no longer reread it after discovering Peter's horrible phonetic accent), and IN SPAAAACE is about the only thing I could have thought of to make it better. Though I agree, casting will be everything.

I really do enjoy the book (heh, though I agree about the accent thing), so I hope this translates well.

Actually, Errol Flynn was without a moustache in Captain Blood. But I do know what you mean. If they cast the "flavors of the week" in the leads, it's gonna really suck. If they put some talented people in there, it might be pretty good.

Mm, true. I had The Sea Hawk in my head. But yes, I'd love some very talented actors in the rolls instead of the usual A-list "stars".

No.

I'm sorry.

But no.

There are just some things that shouldn't be mucked about with, and I think that setting such a classic in outer-freakin'-space would definitely qualify as mucking. My knee-jerk reaction to this is to make the Mr. Yuk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Yuk) face. (And OMG do I feel old for referencing that.)

Then again, I sort of had the same reaction the first time I heard that they were going to make Starbuck a girl. So there's room for me to be pleasantly surprised.
