Sci Fi Channel Changes Name

To Syfy Channel.

I shit you not.

Very telling is this paragraph:

“If you ask people their default perceptions of Sci Fi, they list space, aliens and the future,” Howe said. “That didn’t capture the full landscape of fantasy entertainment: the paranormal, the supernatural, action and adventure, superheroes” — areas of programming that have becoming increasingly important as the network has found ratings success with shows like Ghost Hunters, ECW: Extreme Championship Wrestling, and Destination Truth.

Yup, they're changing their name (but only the spelling, we can't be crazy about it!) so they can feel better about incorporating reality programming and wrestling. Way to be different, guys.

I...buh...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

*wipes away tears* That's the funniest thing I've seen in a while. "Syfy." Wow. I see Bonnie Hammer is still there...this has her fingerprints all over it, for sure.

I just, it looks like the sort of "creative spelling" you get with so many kids these days because their parents want them to be special snowflakes. Bonnie Hammer, will you ever stop bringing the fail?

And the thing is, I don't totally not get the idea of a name change in general. They've always been sort of the sci-fi/fantasy/horror network, and while I think the wrestling is ridiculously beyond their niche, if it pays the bills for things like BSG, I can live with it--anyway, I can see why they might want a more inclusive name. But "Syfy"? I...ow. I agree, that has to come from the mind of someone who named their kids M'kynzye, Jaidyn, and Karlyie.

I guess I don't agree with their statement that Sci-fi only means spaceships and aliens to people. Not when they've had all kinds of shows before that deal with that "full landscape of fantasy entertainment" - The Invisible Man, Eureka, Sanctuary, and countless reruns of The Sentinel and all those older skiffy shows.

But if they think they're losing audience not b/c they're showing crap, but because they need a rebranding? Then they're not gonna improve at all.

Aaaaaahhhh... Wot? How does po-mo misspelling help this branding exercise? And more importantly, how much did the company who convinced them to do this get paid? Aaaaand, how much do you want to be that the people on this branding team have children with names like Crystle, and Madysonn (because you get more points in Scrabble?)

I just can't imagine anyone pitching this idea to a board and not being met with hysterical laughter. I mean...Syfy! *snicker*

She just can't stop bringing us the fail! I wonder who pitched the idea, and if it was her, how the hell did the committee or whoever not burst out laughing? I'd never be able to keep a straight face.

I just...if this was April 1, I would assume this is a joke! Because it is literally too ridiculously stupid to be real! Honestly, wtf? Is there ANY PERSON at that network who is even remotely familiar with what skiffy IS?? UGH.

Well, with Battlestar Galactica ending and Farscape long gone, can't see any reason to watch SyFy.

Of all the idiot renaming attempts anywhere on tv, this one takes the stupid to a new high.

Yeah, BSG was really the last thing I was watching. I'll probably give the new Stargate series a shot, but I'll likely not watch it on TV when it airs.

My folks just recently got a dish, because of the digital conversion. Apparently it's been an eye-opener for them. Speaking with my mother tonight, she was bemused by the fact that my father, a no-nonsense sort of guy, was fascinated with the Sci-Fi channel. Actually, so am I. But apparently, he watches it all the time for the movies. There were a series of crocodile/alligator movies on this weekend, and he couldn't go shopping with her until SuperCroc was done. So my mother sat down and watched it with him.

Her opinion of the movie was: "You know, if you had a little liquor in you, that would have been a very funny movie."

I figure that pretty much sums up Sci-Fi.

(And yes, that is a direct quote from my minister mother. "If you had a little liquor in you..." I nearly died.)

Hee. That sounds like my mother's family. And I love that she calls it "liquor".

God, I hate those stupid movies they show.
