Argh, how annoying. I finally caught that used book store in Chatt. when it was open, but to no avail. They had an entire shelf of Wodehouse, but the prices!! The cheapest book there was $40! One was $80. Yes, they were all hardbacks, and yes, some were first editions, but bloody hell. Not one book was in better than good condition, and most were in slightly poor condition. It's not like they were signed or in pristine condition.

It really sucks, too, b/c they had The Cat-nappers (which is the US version of Aunts Aren't Gentlemen), a Wodehouse biography, the collection of Plum's letters, and a slew of others. They even had Thank You, Jeeves. I want them all, but they're just way overpriced. Stupid blighters.

Anyway, on a happier note, [livejournal.com profile] rosabuddatchery, your ABoF&L tape is in the mail, so you should get it soon :) Hope you enjoy!

New Queer Eye in a few minutes! Yay!

Good lord! I always thought the point of used books was that they were cheaper! Unless it's an out of print thing, or a first edition or something. I can see the point of that.
Even then, if you just want a copy to read, it seems a little excessive.

I know! I mean, if it's a really collectible book, then yes, but these weren't in good condition at all. I'm not an expert or anything, but even as 1st editions these were overpriced. I don't think that bookstore will do well, especially since we have a huge used place, McKay's, that has very good prices.

That sounds good. I used to have several excellent used bookshops near me, it was great! You've probably thought of Ebay aready - I got most of the Aubrey/Maturin books there. Took me ages, of course!

Yeah, I haunt eBay regularly, but I've sort of taken a break from it lately. Too rough on the bank account :) I still need copies of most of the Aubrey/Maturin books. It kills me b/c they had a ton of them at one local used bookstore, but they were still $7 each for the trade paperbacks and I can't afford to shell out right now. Oy.

Ouch. I don't think that's much cheaper than the new price, is it? Not fair.

It's only about half price, so yeah, still pricy. I've gotten lucky there before (found a great hardback of Post Captain for cheap) and even found a few of the last hardbacks in the series in the discount section at Barnes and Noble for $5.

Wouldn't be so bad if my library had all of the books, instead of a few here and there. Why on earth they'd only order a handful out of a series, and not in consecutive order, is beyond me.

Yeah, mine did that. They have the Surgeons Mate and Nutmeg. Right in the middle, and not even next to each other! Maybe the county bought the whole series, and divided them up between all its libraries? Cracked.

Who knows, maybe they're just insane. Annoying blighters. Oh well, I suppose I'll get all the books eventually. I just hate waiting!

I know I'm a stranger but have you/are you in the Royal Navy?

Hi there! No, I'm not in the RN, although it would certainly be cool if I could be (I'm in the US, though). I had considered joining the US Navy, but I'm going to concentrate on grad school first (in Maritime History, so I'll at least be studying the RN).

Well I'm living in Dover right now but after A levels I'll be going to Dartmouth Naval College to study to become an officer - you learn all the history there as well as the physical training and other naval skills.

Eh, what?! Those prices...the mind, it boggles. What a bally pain and shame. :/ My sincerest condolences, that would set me all atwitter with annoyance.

And, oh, thank you for mailing the tape! It's really so sweet of you to do and I shall thank you on behalf of the library as well, for you've helped them avoid a rather nasty imborglio involving me stealing their copy. ;)

I am certainly all atwitter. I really coveted that copy of the Plum letters.

If I've saved you from a life of crime, this is a good thing :) You're very welcome!

in re ABoF&L tape:

Has anyone else who's watched this video worked in a nursing home? Because I worked in one for two years, and I've got to publicly state that the nursing home sketch they do on this is just about the funniest thing I've ever seen. Cas brought the tape over the last time she visited and I nearly died laughing.

But then, I was also having flashbacks.

You're so funny when you laugh that hard :) I was just so happy you enjoyed it as much as I do! It's such fun to share these things.

I really must wonder if one of them had some prior experience with nursing homes and the like. I mean, that little skit had so much spot on satire that it was positively brilliant. I've never seen anything so perfectly capture the disgruntled and pathetic life of a resident, in which a cup of cocoa becomes the most desperate pleasure of a person's life; as well as capturing the strange mix of compassion and sadism that's an almost inevitable side-effect of working in such places.

Very very clever.

I have no idea, but it's possible. Maybe they did research :) And I very much like your description, quite amusing. Compassion and sadism...heh.

Yeah, I think I'm going to stick with eBay, Half.com, and Amazon booksellers. I mean, I'd love those hardbacks I found, but I'm not gonna break the bank to get them.
