castalia: (Torchwood - Ianto knows everything)

Well, that was unexpected! Seriously, I'm kind of surprised they didn't do the typical "character X who has always been a bastard redeems himself by valiantly sacrificing himself at the end to beat D(d)eath, save the world, and inspire a small child". Instead, we had all that but Owen gets to survive, for a unique value of "survive". Next week should be interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they deal with this new development, ie. are they going to fix Owen eventually, leave him as-is indefinitely, or draw it out a bit more then kill him off completely. Any and all of them might be compelling. I still don't like Owen, but I do admit he's an interesting character.

Martha had less to do this week, but I still loved having her on my screen. It amuses me that now she's had the same "get turned very old" experience that the Doctor had. IMO, the writers had to resort to such a drastic option so that Martha wouldn't show everyone on Team Torchwood up again this week ;)

I loved that Martha was the one to yell at Jack for playing with life and death without telling UNIT. That's our practical Martha, looking at the consequences of playing around with things no one understands. *love*

Still not sure exactly how Owen defeated Death, but oh well. Handwaving that, and the beer-spewing stupidness I didn't need (seriously, how many pints did he have???), and the reasons Owen's muscles and brain worked but not things like digestion and circulatory system. *hand is now tired from all the waving*

Also, it annoyed me that their "formaldehyde" was bright blue. It's "formaldehyde solution" or more likely "formalin", and it should be colorless.

The weird camera work when Owen went to the disco didn't work for me at all, but the Death CGI wasn't bad. Not sure what to think about the mini!psychic. She kinda came out of nowhere, so I'd like a little more back story on that, pls.

Small nitpicks aside, I liked this one as a whole. Everyone got to be helpful at one point or another and I think everyone got at least one amusing one-liner. Tosh's crack about whether or not they were going to take seriously something Gwen just Googled amused me. As did the rather cracktastic Thing moment when the glove was running around all by itself - I'm still not sure if that was hilariously bad or hilariously awesome. *snicker*

I was also amused to see that Team Torchwood was so color coordinated this week. Jack and Owen in dull blues/greys, Ianto and Gwen in neon pink, and Tosh and Martha in purple. True, each pair has similar coloring and look damn good in those shades, but still, amusing wardrobe choices.

As for spec, Jack said this particular glove was "different", so does that mean there's still two more gloves out there to match the two they've used so far? In previous trailers, I believe Ianto said "gloves come in pairs", whereas in tonight's ep he said "they usually come in pairs". Slightly different, so is that a case of the "next time on..." scene not matching the actual episode dialogue or will we see that version of the line in the future? I'm avoiding spoilers, so I suppose I'll just speculate until next week. Here's hoping Martha gets some good stuff to do before she leaves us again. =(
