I'm going to stay out of all this LJ mess right now, b/c a lot of people are reacting in big ways and there's no way to say what I think of it without offending someone.
It's gone to Hell in a handbasket, frankly. Oi. Though, I have to say, I can agree with people who are offended by being lumped into those "pedophile and rapist" category. I just hope they backed up their stories. Meep.
The journaler you reference is way off on one thing. Rights don't "come from" the Bill of Rights or any other government document. Rights are inherent in a person. The Bill of Rights is just an enumeration of some of the rights every individual can assert. One of the reasons that some founding fathers fought the addition of the BoR was that it would be seen as limiting freedom to just those items listed.
True, but the point remains that LJ isn't some government trying to quash the freedom of speech. This is, in a way, a free speech issue in general, but I'm just seeing far too many people overreacting in a big way and applied these terms to the wrong situation. It's making fandom look bad to the non-fannish world as well, who are only going to look at this and see people upset at losing their Harry Potter underage porn.
