Okay, one good thing about being back in the country - I can take my laptop to Best Buy and yell at them.

While I was in Wales, I noticed a dead pixel on my screen - annoying, but as I have a 3-year warranty I felt it could wait until I finished the damn thesis and got back to the States. I didn't want to deal with trying to ship it back to them for repair.

That's just expected, I suppose, and wasn't terribly upsetting, but now there's something that's just unacceptable.

I was thinking about upgrading my RAM on this thing, b/c one can never have too much RAM. I wasn't sure what kind I needed and the booklets that came with the laptop didn't say, so I downloaded a freeware diagnostic tool - Karen's Computer Profiler - to see about the details of it all. That worked fine, but it reported a number that made me go "bzuh?!".

The damn thing says I only have 384MB worth of RAM. I double checked the control panel "see more info about your computer" and sure enough, it says 384. Both the box this thing came with and the receipts describe it as having 512MB - that's certainly what I noted at the time b/c why would I buy anything less, y'know? So they've gipped me on memory, the bastards. It's probably a fault of the Compaq factory themselves, but still, I paid for 512 and only got 384. I had no reason to check before and I'm honestly surprised I didn't catch it sooner. I'm going to feel silly taking it to Best Buy with such a complaint, but damn it, I'm owed some RAM here. If they're nice about it maybe I'll pay them for an upgrade, but surely something like this falls under the warranty. Geez.

Crikey! That's terrible. If it were in England, and indeed if I were in England I would write a stiff letter to The Times.

It does make one wonder how often this happens and how many people never catch on to it. I'll take it by this week to see about fixing the problem; if they're not obliging, then a stiff letter to somewhere (consumer reports, perhaps) might be in order.

That happened with my keyfaub - it's supposed to be a gig. I was using it for a while, but I was just transfering things to school to be printed and then deleting so I never took noticed it wasn't as big as it should have been until I actually tried to fill it and then checked the settings.
