Return of Sci-Fi Fridays

New SG-1 and SGA tonight, whee! Well, it'll be tomorrow morning before I can download them, but still, Sci-Fi Friday again!
I'm actually of mixed feelings about this. Still very excited about the shows themselves - SG-1 is more fun than it has been in ages and although sometimes I'm a bit nostalgic for the show the way it used to be, I quite like the new dynamics and the fresh blood they've brought to it. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing season ten, especially with Claudia Black as a permanent fixture. If they actually let her and AT have some scenes together I'll be a very happy fan, as well, b/c the show has lacked in good female interaction since we lost Janet.
SGA is a bit more problematic for me, b/c while I do love the show for the most part, the shine is a bit dulled by my complete disinterest in (and occasionally outright dislike of) the two "main" characters. Obviously I don't see the same Sheppard as the majority of the fandom, and Weir annoys me greatly. However, my love of the scientists and of Teyla and Ronon more than make up for that. Also, despite being the sudden minority pairing in the fandom (and I remember when McKay/Beckett was the most popular pairing - really, with Paul and David hamming it up for everyone both on and off screen, how did that not attract the slashers??), McKay and Beckett still bring the slashy moments for me.
I've said this in recent discussions (mostly over in
nostalgia_lj's journal), but I really don't enjoy the SGA fandom anymore. After the massive influx of fans from DS, Sentinel and other such shows (and I love those shows as well, but there's something about fans coming from the "buddy cop" genre who seem to want to turn SGA into that kind of fandom - seriously, with all the AUs it seems no one likes the actual setting of the show, so what happened to all the SF fen?) it's all McShep, all the time, to the point where I find myself unable to squee with much of anyone in the fandom b/c our interests simply don't overlap. It's the first time I've been unable to see the most popular slash pairing in one of my fandoms; more than that, I really dislike half the pairing so the entire thing has become rather distasteful. Especially when so many of my favorite fic writers from other fandoms have come over to SGA but I can't read any of their stuff b/c it's McShep. Yes, you say, if no one is writing what you want, go write it yourself, but honestly, how much fun is that? It's boring when you have no one to squee with, sitting on your own while everyone else on your flist is having so much fun with a toy you just don't understand.
So, yeah, I'll be talking about season three, but I probably won't be taking much of an active role in SGA fandom. Sorry to any of my friends who are all into the McShep and the AUs and the crackfic, b/c I don't want to harsh your squee, but reading about it is just frustrating for me so I'm taking a step back this season.
In project news, my Y-maze is finally finished so after siliconing a few last pieces then flushing it out to get rid of toxins, I'll be starting some control experiments next week. Yay!
