Notebook advice?

To my all-knowing flist,
I have one absolutely essential thing for school left to buy: a new laptop. My current one is just...full. I've outgrown it horribly. Have done a bit of research on the new tech available, and have been told the newer AMD 64 processors would be the way to go, since I wouldn't outgrow it so soon. Need 512mb, at least 60 gig, lightweight enough to cart around the university, etc.
After dropping by Best Buy and talking with the saleslady there, then surfing their site a bit, I have almost decided on this one. It's shiny enough, with the space and processing speed I need, not too over budget and they have the nice 48-month payment plan with no interest for the whole year, so when I get refund checks from my student loan I can easily pay this off in no time (I love that computers are considered legitimate student expenses and are covered by loans, whee!).
So, anyone got anything to add? Yay or nay on the Compaq? Other nifty things I should see first before going out and buying?
Also? Last night was my last night at the hell that is Steak'n Shake. Marvelous fellow 3rd shift people gave me a card and a cake (they remembered I love carrot cake! *hugs them all*), and we all ordered pizza, too. They totally catered to me and I loved it. They actually surprised me with the cake and all; I had been teasing the manager all night as is my wont, and he was all "One of these days, Alice..." and "That's one..." so when he got to three strikes I was to have my "punishment". He blindfolded me with paper towels and led me up front, where instead of any amusing teasing I was expecting there was the cake and card. As much as I won't miss the job, I will miss the people. This was the first time anyone's ever really given me a little party type thing like this, and I enjoyed it immensely. Now I'm really looking forward to the bon voyage party my choir is throwing me on Sunday ;)
Thoughts on Sci-Fi Friday soon.

Date: 2005-09-12 03:35 pm (UTC)It's a Satellite m45 with a 100 gig harddrive, 512 megs of memory and a centrino processor, widescreen, and with a R/W CD/DVD player. So far, I'm liking it. I don't know if it's out of your price range or not, but you might want to check it out.
