Sci-Fi Friday!

Bit more of a delay on this one due to a last minute dinner party type thing to which I was unexpectedly invited. More on that later. First, more important things!
My love for this season continues strong. Honestly, they could keep going with this group and I'd probably never miss Jack or Sam. I love that a female character on this show is finally allowed to be funny, and that the military leader can be smart without the need to cover it up with the annoying dumb act.
"I didn't hear any screaming or squishing noises..." - love Vala so damn much. Also love the way Daniel yells Teal'c's name during that scene and his look of helplessness when he realizes he can't help if he can't see the symbols. Mitchell isn't even on his radar yet, not on an emotional level. It'll be interesting to see how they forge their own bond.
The sword fight with the knight killed me. Haven't seen BB do any other sword fighting, but if he's actually got skill and was trying to look like he doesn't, he succeeded brilliantly. The whole thing was nice cheesy fun. Mitchell is hot, stubborn, doesn't give up and has a good sense of humor - sounds like a good match for SG-1 to me. Extra points for the Sesame Street reference.
The image of Vala all sprawled out in that treasure, gold coins all over her chest and wearing a tiara on her head to boot...classic. I am so in love with this character.
Didn't think MS could talk any faster, but once again he proves otherwise. Hey, PTB, when are we going to get a scene with him and DH so they can have a little contest?
You'd think Jack would have taken both Landry and Mitchell aside and warned them that when Daniel is this interested in a new toy he needs someone to counterbalance him or else they run the risk of him just going forward all gung-ho and getting himself in just this sort of pickle. Self-preservation, lemming, yadda yadda...
Love seeing more of Dr Lee. He's become a nice recurring character these days, and he and Daniel seem to have bonded nicely since they were kidnapped. Love the tried and tested SGC method of After A Point, You Just Have to Turn it On.
So, the new doc. I'll have to reserve judgement until I see a bit more of her. I never watched Andromeda much (just the occasional ep for specific guest stars), so I'm not too familiar with Lexa's other work, but she seems ok. Though really, I wish we could have gotten a minority actress for the new doctor.
One thing I'm boggling at is how many people I'm seeing online who thought she was Landry's ex-wife or something. That's just...are we that conditioned to seeing something sexual in every interaction? Gateworld told us weeks ago she was his daughter, and their scenes together fell very close to home for me - I've been where she is, working in the same place as her father, walking that line between professionalism and having that "in". It's even harder when there's been a falling out, and I sense something like that between them. Props to the actors for conveying it so well. I have to wonder if Dr Lam is something of a rebellious former Daddy's Girl.
As much as I love the SGC uniforms, I really enjoy it when we get to see them in other interesting getups. Shanks looks awesome in those boots and Claudia totally pulls off that crazy dress. The actor imitating Daniel did a pretty good job with his line, but the blonde chick wasn't even close to getting Vala's quirks across.
We've seen similar fanatical religious types on SG-1 before (several times, oy) but they've never turned quite this dark before. I'd been spoiled for the burning, but to see it shown as much as it was surprised me. I didn't think they'd have the guts for it.
Daniel broke my heart when he went to Vala, cradling her so gently. I'd prefer they didn't actually become a couple or anything, as that would take a lot of the fun out of it, but I love that he does actually care for her in a way. Most of the women Daniel is genuinely attracted to (discounting the ones he simply rescues or who only get him via the use of chemical/alien influence) are the strong-willed, independent, intelligent type. He and Vala have a good balance.
That Orii priest had more than a passing resemblance to Sokar. He did save Vala, but I doubt he has very good intentions about it. Guess we'll find out in a week. *grumbles*
There were great bits in this ep, though as a whole it didn't engage my interest as much as I expected. Loved McKay's reaction to losing Black Crew Member Cannon Fodder #2, and Carson's fussing afterwards. There was enough touching in that 15-second scene to make up for the lack of interaction during the rest of the ep.
Narim's Simon's new hair was fugly. Weir should've dumped his ass first, IMO, if he's enough of a jerk to think a year is just oh so long.
Carson in civvies! Nice suit.
I like that they're not just forgetting Ford. Shep in particular has really latched on to this, which will make for a nice continuing storyline.
Hermod/Hermiod the griping, grumbling Asgard is love. Shep needs to watch how he reacts around aliens who don't look human, though. Let's get a little professionalism here. *has to admit Colonel Skinner and Landry had a point when they said Shep wasn't the best choice to be the military leader*
I was sad to hear they won't be using the puddlejumpers as much, but at least the 302s look just alien enough to be out of the ordinary. I still like the PJs better, though.
So, next week we get to meet Ronon Dex. Should be interesting. Let's hope his acting skills match his pretty looks.
So far we've had almost no forward plot movement this season, but I don't care one bit. The characters are all so engaging that I could watch them interact for hours like this.
No Boomer at all this week, though, which made me sad.
Lee was so hot leading his team against the Cylon boarders. I love how much we see them actually get hurt, how dirty and disheveled and bloody everyone gets.
So much Billy and Dualla in this one! I adore those two so much and was thrilled to bits when they kissed at the end. *yes, admits to liking het, so hush*
Chief Tyrol continues to be my new tv boyfriend. First he's such the great big brother type for Cally (mother-frakker, hee) and then he rips my heart out over his dying crewman. The raw grief in that scene from every character really choked me up.
I want to know what piano piece that was in all the Starbuck/Helo scenes. It was just beautiful. I'm guessing they either had something composed just for the occasion or chose an obscure composer, b/c playing anything well known would be terribly jarring in this universe.
Speaking of music, I really want the US credits back. I miss the music in that version and the teaser clips that end on the BSG seal.
I totally melted when Lee bent down and kissed Adama's forehead. He may not agree with his father to the point of mutiny, but he still loves him. Too bad Tigh can't see that separation.
Ok, I'm ready for next week. *dreads the work week ahead but knows there will be a nice reward at the end of it*

*agrees* With everything you'v said. *g*
I wonder what people, who don't go online to check out gate stuff, think about the new Doc and her relationship to the General. TPTB didn't do very much to give us an indication of what kind of relationship they have.

In nearly every review I've read on LJ, the poster has wondered if she was his ex-wife. Which, yeah, makes me wonder how much the tv lines between romance and familial relations has been blurred.

Nah, it's still slash, as Billy is a total girl (gd&r) . . .
He may not agree with his father to the point of mutiny, but he still loves him. Too bad Tigh can't see that separation.
Tigh's giving thanks that he never had kids was priceless. :-) I thought he showed his worth in this episode by correctly identifying the cylon's intentions on the ship. <3 for him.
I thought it was weird, with an entire empty city to loot, Starbuck goes back to her shithole apartment (which she claims to have no attachment to). She's in a city she knows -- common sense would be to hit a higher rent district where better gear could be had. But no, we had to suffer through classical music appreciation 101 instead. ;-P
I also enjoyed Baltar's vision of Adama drowning the baby. He really is such a submissive, automatically handing the kid over to Adama in his dream then reflexively "yes sir-ing" Crashdown when the inept LT starts chewing him out. I wonder if Six's assertion that all the rest of his fellow crash survivors will die is true? If so, it's going to be so much fun watching him freak as they drop one-by-one.

*liked the classical* Oh well, guess it's human nature to head back to where you know. And it makes for dramatic tv ;)

Mm, me too. The Moses parallels in that scene were wonderfully creepy. But I have to admit I will be upset if Tyrol and Cally bite it.

Date: 2005-07-25 11:22 am (UTC)ITA. I'd also hate to see Crashdown go, even though it's his inept leadership skills that will probably get everyone ded. If only he was a marine . . .
Next week's ep looks good with Zarek and some political stuff.

I'd been enjoying it, but hadn't really thought about it like that. So true. I'm liking Col. Ben, he's trying so hard...
The image of Vala all sprawled out in that treasure, gold coins all over her chest and wearing a tiara on her head to boot...
I totally thought of the scene in PotC when Captain Jack is wearing the crown and looting through all the treasure.
Shep needs to watch how he reacts around aliens who don't look human, though.
I thought that, too. After all, Teyla is an alien, except of course, a pretty alien. Though, I was able to get past it b/c "Is he supposed to be naked like that?" made me laugh.
Lee was so hot leading his team against the Cylon boarders.
Nothing to add to that, just agreeing.

I will admit to giggling at that. *g* But yeah, he's fine when the aliens are pretty females, but anything else and we have a diplomacy problem. I have a feeling that if not for the gene, he's not the type the SGC would have even hired in the first place.

Can't say enough about Jamie's hotness ;)

Date: 2005-07-25 10:52 pm (UTC)I believe I have to agree. Ever-so-slowly, he's kind of turning into a team leader, in that he feels repsonsible and cares about what happens to his team and such, but it was by accident. It's an interesting contrast from Jack or Col. Mitchell who have better apparent skills and qualities for the job.
Can't say enough about Jamie's hotness ;)
Just, *sigh*

Date: 2005-07-25 07:20 am (UTC)*nods* I definitely agree with that. I have to wonder if I would have picked up the same vibes if I hadn't been spoiled. But there was something about her attitude that reminded me of myself when having to work with my dad as my sort-of boss.

Date: 2005-07-25 06:50 am (UTC)Also kudos to Daniel for translating a bit of text w/just descriptions such as "sad face".

I like her well enough and I suppose the brought her in, in hopes of getting some viewers who might be fans of hers or something. Ratings and such or something.

...wtf? Did they fall off the stupid truck? Of course, I won't mention Megs thought they were exes but my odd look and going, 'wtf? r u on crack? that's his kid'. Then she kicked me and we went back to fawning over Daniel. Ha, and I saw it and didn't even know it was his kid. :is brilliant:
The actor imitating Daniel did a pretty good job with his line, but the blonde chick wasn't even close to getting Vala's quirks across.
Really? Now, see, I saw it completely opposite. I thought the blonde chick had her pretty well and the guy had nothing close. Huh. I might have to look at it again then ask Mum for her opinion b/c it's better than yours. ;p
We've seen similar fanatical religious types on SG-1 before (several times, oy) but they've never turned quite this dark before. I'd been spoiled for the burning, but to see it shown as much as it was surprised me. I didn't think they'd have the guts for it.
Megs: Did they say prostitution???
Me: Prostration! XD
Megs: Oh. I'd rather see six hours or prostitution.
Me: ...:baps: Daniel is on his knees, what more do you want?
Megs: Paul and...OH MY GOD! YOU'VE CORRUPTED ME!!!
Me: Watch them prostrate and shush.
Megs: Prostate, what?
Me: ...:dies:

THANK YOU. He's too unpredictable, imo. Mitchell, on the other hand, hits me as a wonderful leader. Well, so far. :loves Hermiod, toooo!:
