castalia: (J/D wedding - 200th ep)

I hate to think that's the last time I'll get to type that cut-tag code for SG1. Man, so many years of my fannish life have been tied up in this show, even though I've drifted in and out of the fandom itself from time to time. It's one of the most divided fandoms I've ever come across, with 'ship wars that will last at least another 10 years if not forever. Even so, I love its dysfunctional ass, and the show is among the most dear to my heart.

While I've fallen in and out of love with some of the characters over the years (oh, Samantha Carter, how I waffled over you for so long, and how much I've come to love you again these past two seasons), at the end of the day the show's given me so many lovable characters, some of whom actually lived to see the end of the series. Bra'tac, Major Davis, Dr Lee, Colonel Reynolds, Walter - you are among the few recurring characters who managed to avoid being killed, and I cherish you. It's no great secret that Daniel Jackson is one of my all-time favorite TV characters; I love his determination, his love of knowledge, and his geeky side, and yes, even his arrogant, emotionally retarded side. I love the friendship between Daniel and Jack, which will always be the foundation of my love for the show. I love the dynamic of the team and how much they care for each other, and I love the newcomers no less.

Ever since the movie I've enjoyed the focus on Egyptian mythology and those wacky Goa'uld, intergalactic cross-dressers with criminal fashion sense. I love that no matter where one goes in the universe, there will always be pine trees. I love that SG-1 put the universe in danger just as often as they saved it, usually at the same time. I love the cheesy effects, how predictable the show could be yet how much it changed, and all the in-jokes that developed over the years. I know we still have the movies to look forward to, but this is still a closure of sorts and though I wish it could go on so I could see more of the new characters and the new direction the series has taken, I'm thankful we had 10 great years of it.

*blows nose*

Now, on to episode thoughts:

Mitchell and Teal'c sparring = hot. One of these days I need to read some slash fic for those two.

THOR!!!!! *happy dance* I love that we got to see Thor again.

The thought of the Asgard dying off saddens me even further, but that does explain why they'd be willing to hand over all of their knowledge and technology. And they brought back the reference (and the music) to The Fifth Race!! *squees so much* However, I am very sad that they let the Asgard blow up their homeworld without Jack being able to see Thor one last time. In deference to [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj, I'll have to believe Thor made a quick visit to D.C. before all this.

Okay, didn't see the time dilation thing coming, but it's just the sort of wacky plan this show is infamous for, so I'll happily handwave for old times' sake.

Vala, to Daniel: "I'm going to go crazy, and I'm taking you with me."

Hee. This whole thing is reminiscent of other shows that have done the "One or more characters live out their lives in a time dilation field and things develop, though it all gets set back again at the end" storyline. Still, it seems fitting that we go out on a tv cliché.

Oh, Daniel. Over the years you have been an amazingly insensitive clod from time to time, but I think that's probably the worst example ever. I was relieved to see that underneath all that ranting were some honestly emotionally vulnerable points, and I can tell Vala scares the hell out of you and you don't want to get your heart broken again, and until you saw her cry I think you truly thought she was just bored and toying with you. But damn, you know how to be as emotionally thick as a brick wall and as cruel as a system lord.

My slasher heart admits that as good at that whole scene was I do wish they hadn't gone there. I liked them well enough when they were just friends and Daniel wasn't interested.

...okay, so I'll admit his little smile and "You'd better not be messing with me." was cute and tugged at the ol' heartstrings. And Vala's little smile and wave as she left his quarters.

Okay, and it was cute when they stayed together for the next 50 years. That's commitment.

I loved seeing Sam learn to play the cello. It provided a lovely backdrop for the "time passes" montage, though I do wish we'd seen a bit more of Mitchell than his fits of temper, though I loved it as part of his character b/c yes, a guy who has fought tooth and nail not only to get where he is but to be upright and mobile at all will not be the type to sit idle for that many years with no outlet. We saw that back when they had the little getaway at the cabin and this just took it to an extreme. Also, we needed more of Teal'c than just sparring with Mitchell (though I love those sparring sessions, oh yes). I love [livejournal.com profile] greensilver's theory that he wrote Bra'tac long-suffering letters about how he hadn't killed his team members yet. Daniel continuing to learn all he could was just right. I was surprised that Sam gave up trying to find the answer, but she figured it out in the end and saved the day.

When Landry died I had to get up and leave the internet cafe where I was watching this, b/c I knew I was going to cry by the time the episode ended and I had to go to choir practice. Waiting until later to watch the last ten minutes was much more preferable than going to practice red-eyed. Still, if I were Landry I think I'd be hurt that no one wanted to be at my death bed except Carter.

It was a nice touch, having Teal'c age so much less rapidly than the others, and of course he was the logical choice to stay behind and execute the plan. It'll be interesting to see if they carry that age difference (I think that makes him at least 150 now, right?) into the movies.

Okay, so when Daniel and Vala did their little I-love-you-but-we're-not-going-to-say-it thing, I caved. *waves 'shipper flag* Sure, all of that was undone, but I suppose the implication is that they have the potential to get together some time in the future, even though it might take longer for them to act on it.

The effects during the time reversal were wicked, and yay, they are going to keep older!Teal'c with his new salt and pepper haired look. Does this mean they also have all the Asgard knowledge, or did the crystal erase everything?

I am so happy they ended it with the team going through the gate. As Mitchell said, that's how it's supposed to happen and I can't think of any other way to do it that wouldn't piss off half the viewing audience. It didn't feel like an ending episode, and I'm rather glad of that because otherwise it would feel more than a little underwhelming. We still have the movies, so it isn't really the end.

Still. Damn, I'm going to miss my show.
