Am attempting to bake cookies.

Yes, at 5 in the morning. Shut up.

Mum has tempted me for weeks with this recipe she found in the paper for Mudslide Cookies. They have unsweet and bittersweet chocolate in the batter, coffee, walnuts, and dark chocolate chips. I asked her to make them for me, she said she didn't have the ingredients.

[livejournal.com profile] cimmerianwillow and I (after a nice dinner at the IHOP - I say nice, though my supposed Harvest Grain and Nut pancakes were utterly nutless, the bastards, which resulted in me getting free pancakes to go, with nuts, but anyway, I digress) hopped over to Wally World, where I bought the needed ingredients. Decided such a large recipe was daunting, and cut all the measurements in half.

Tonight I have learned:

1. Chocolate is a bitch to chop. Easier to melt that way, obviously, but I still managed to make a mess. Damnable chocolate.

2. Parchment paper is so the way to go. Huzzah for easy clean-up!

3. I am getting better at coodinating all the myriad things that must be done in order to complete a recipe. Ovens here, these things set aside, these other things melted and set aside, these other things mixed, etc. Takes forever when you don't do it in the proper sequence, but so far am managing ok. Go me!

4. Thus far, nothing has caught on fire or spilled all over the floor. In perhaps a first for me, my hands are the only messy things about my person. I take this as a good sign.

5. Already knew this one, but baking cookies smell = omg, so good.

Hm. I wonder if this recipe could possibly be improved upon by adding coconut. IMO, no cookie cannot be improved by nuts and/or coconut.

Success!

These are pretty good. *munch munch* Very rich, though, and overwhelmingly chocolatey, so I can't imagine eating more than perhaps two of these at a time. Can't really taste the coffee, though, which is slightly disappointing.

The coconut worked nicely as an addition - I adore the crunchy texture, and really, eating coconut is like an hour's entertainment. I can get away with the occasional Mounds Bar, b/c really, it takes me several days to eat the thing. One bite lasts 20 minutes, thanks to the crunchy yet chewy coconut goodness. Coconut is the perfect food for the orally fixated.

These aren't my favorite cookies ever, but they're good. A little too much chocolate for my tastes, perhaps. I think I'll start pestering mum to make her Ranger Cookies again.
