Linked by the ever-useful Cephalopod News, there's an NBC article about a giant squid caught off the Canary Islands recently.
Pretty small article, and slightly disappointing, but at least there are pictures. This one was already dead in the nets and is only 30 feet long; however, finding any specimen of giant squid is noteworthy.
More interesting is another recent article at MSNBC about deep-sea discoveries of what may be new species of squid and anglerfish. Some really cool pics with this one. They also mention depressing amounts of trash found on the sea floor, endangered sea creatures, and some fascinating tracks or burrows left on the sea floor by unknown animals. Definitely worth a look.
A slightly older, but much more in-depth article about giant squid follows well-known teuthologist Steve O'Shea on his quest to capture live baby giant squid. If anyone is going to succeed at this, it'll probably be O'Shea.
In the world of octopi, there's a cute article by the Scotsman about a mischievous giant octopus who aquarium staff is keeping out of trouble with a specialized puzzle box. These guys are notorious for escaping their tanks, so I like the idea of toys to keep them occupied :)
( And a picture of a baby squid, just to round out the post... )
