castalia: (Rodney piss off)

*sigh* Icon theft.

So, a friend points me to the David Hewlett mailing list on yahoogroups, says it's cool. I join, and hey, quite a few people on there, it seems, and they post news and reviews and great screen caps. And so I said yay, this is nice. Some of them are a little nuts, but hey, it's a mailing list.

Happiness, right?

Well, until I looked in the folder marked "icons" in the photo section. They've put up a bunch of LJ icons without saying where they came from or who made them. Almost half of them are mine.

[livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj? I know I recognize several of yours. And there's some I've noticed people on my flist using.

I know there's a new icon theft kerfuffle every week, but these things are irksome. I wouldn't care if it were just bases, but dammit, I put a lot of time and effort into these things, and when I post them I request credit. They do include a link to [livejournal.com profile] atlantis_icons in the links section, but that's it.

Now I have to figure out who to complain to and how to do it relatively politely. I'd hate to have my introduction to the list be all "Hi, I'm new. Btw, you suck!".

*sigh*

Just get on and say,

'hey! I noticed your mailing list and I was so happy to join. The problem is when I was searching through your photo section I noticed that some of them were mine! While I'm happy you enjoy my icons, could you please credit them? I just put so much hardwork into them and I'd just like due credit. Thanks!'

It's polite and straight to the point.

Nobody should be taking your icons and not crediting them. It sucks because you put so much work into them.

Just say no to icon theft, yo!

[identity profile] castalianspring.livejournal.com 2004-09-06 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think I'm gonna contact the person who uploaded them privately.

[identity profile] slashophile.livejournal.com 2004-09-06 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Good, no body should be using your icons without permission. Tis mean, yo.

If they refuse to acknowledge you, we'll just send crazykatanawielding!David after them. ;p

[identity profile] brightbeak.livejournal.com 2004-09-06 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
there should be an ID associated w/ the upload - when you are in the folder, use LIST view, not thumbnail, and the creator/uploader's ID is there :)

that should at least help you track down who's been doing the uploading, and they're not the ones who did the thievery, they can at least point from whom the icons were received.

Thanks for the tip! It seems every icon was uploaded by the same person, so I may just contact them privately.

sounds like the most polite, and possibly the most efficient way, of going about this. why make a ruckus when it's not needed, save it up for when you are in a REALLY pissy snit :)

Hee. Actually, I don't think it'll be too hard to be polite. I've been in such a happy Atlantis-related daze lately, I can't even summon up very much righteous anger.

*grumbles* That's pretty sucky. I hate people who steal. Bastards. I know what that's like. Wel, I almost do. A fanart author I knew became a penpal with me about two years back. I helped her hunt down some thieves. There were a LOT!

*hugs Casta* *gives BecKay lemons* *loads shotgun, just incase the people don't listen to Lady of the Iconage*

Thanks, babe *hugsback*

BecKay? *snorts* That's cute :)

Eh, as a filthy pinko I don't really care much but, yeah, generally BAD FUCKING NETIQUETTE OMG.

"You see, I *try* to stop wanking, but fandom won't let me..."

*headdesk*

[identity profile] castalianspring.livejournal.com 2004-09-06 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. The wank is inevitable. Resistance is futile, and all that.

Filthy pinko :P

Um... dumb newbie question

Hiya! I love your icons and have gratefully adopted several that you posted recently. ::points:: See? Pretty!

I am an LJ newbie and pretty much a technoturkey. I know I'm supposed to "credit" when I use an icon someone else created, and I tried to do so when uploading to my userpics, but would you mind letting me know if I've done it correctly, and if not, what's considered the right and polite way to do so?

Many thanks!

Hi! I'm glad you're enjoying the Atlantis icons :) Standard crediting procedure on LJ is to include the username of the icon-creator in the keywords. You've already done that, so no worries :)

[identity profile] lauraspeak.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
erg, I feel badly. I am the one who posted the link to [Unknown site tag] to the yahoo kiddos. I didnt know they were gonna steal. eeeek.

but in their defense, it would seem that some of them were not very familar w/ livejournal, so I'm sure they met no harm.

-sends castalia vitural baked goods and begs forgiveness-

[identity profile] lauraspeak.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
damn html, the unknown tag is supposed to say Atlantis Icons.

further proof they shouldve never taught me html...

[identity profile] castalianspring.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, don't feel badly. Totally not your fault. Those not on LJ won't always be familiar with LJ netiquette.

The forgiveness is yours automatically, but I'll accept the baked goods anyway ;)

[identity profile] lauraspeak.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
is grateful.

-passes Castalia a vitural scone-

this might sound a bit dense, but how do you pronounce your name? I fear I am butchering the pronounciation...

-gives more scones, includes a Wesley or a Giles.. you can decide...

[identity profile] castalianspring.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Castalia: rhymes with Australia ;) Really, that's the easiest way to think about it. The first A is short, the second long.

Mmm, I love scones. *goes to get the clotted cream and jam*
