Oscars ramblings.

Am writing this as I watch, so a small warning for rambling thoughts and random squees.

Johnny Depp is there! Huzzah! He looks amazing, as usual.

Hobbits! I see hobbits in the background! They all look so cute! Billy keeps sitting down and standing up again *g*

The Billy Crystal montage thing cracked my shit up. Mostly b/c of all the LOTR and M&C references; I'm easy to please there.

Sir Ian looks so great up there introducing the RotK clip. Where's the rest of the cast, though? All I see are the hobbits, Ian, Liv, Peter, and behind-the-scenes guys.

Finding Nemo got best animated. Loved it, so yay. Am now interested in that Triplets of Belleville thing, though.

I'm sort of "meh" about Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson right now. It's sad that I should be dreading the S&H film.

Awww, the guy who won best animated short thanked his "beautiful boyfriend" in his acceptance speech. How sweet!

Liv looks absolutely lovely. I find that 20s hairstyle rather fetching.

Hm, I very much like two of the songs up for Oscars. The first one from Cold Mountain is lovely, but then, so is "Into the West". Annie Lennox sounds like crap tonight, though. Watching her sing is rather painful, and she's wavering all over the place.

Bill Murray is too funny. I'm so torn about Best Actor, b/c as much as I love Johnny, Murray is an all-time favorite.

Oh wow, Blake Edwards got the Lifetime Achievement award. I adore the Pink Panther movies, so this is very cool.

So far, the award count for RotK is up to 5. Not a bad night, all in all :) I'm so glad they got art, costumes and effects, although I'm disappointed M&C and PotC haven't gotten anything yet.

Woohoo! I was hoping Master and Commander would get something, and they so deserved the sound editing award. Yay!

"There is no one left in New Zealand to thank." Hee!

They're playing "Appalachian Spring" during the Katherine Hepburn tribute! Hurrah for Aaron Copland music. And what a lovely tribute this is.

Eep! My tape ran out, dammit...

Aw, Gregory Peck. I think I'm going to go cry now.

Oh my. I had no idea some of these people had died. *sniffle* And there's John Ritter, and composer Michael Kamen. The background music is lovely here.

Ooh, original score category...go to Howard Shore, pleasepleaseplease...YES!! Woohoo! God, he so deserved that award. Such a lovely, talented man.

Hey, where'd Billy go? He's not in his seat. Don't tell me he went to the bathroom and missed an award for one of his movies :)

Hm, film editing. No idea. Ah, another one for RotK! What's the blue circle pin thingy PJ and some other LOTR guys are wearing?

What's this A Mighty Wind? So many names I recognize, how have I not heard of it? So this is up for best song? Huh, didn't know Catherine O'Hara could sing. She's not bad, nice alto. Wow, I kinda like this song. That ending was rather sweet, and they did a good job coming back in on that note a capella. Anyone seen this movie?

Wow, now this is a much different song style. It's...interesting. I'm really gonna have to see that Triplets of Belleville thing. Love this jazzy feel.

Ok, Will Ferrell and Jack Black are hysterical with this song thing. And they're on pitch, to boot :) They're really not bad.

Wow, I'm torn on the Best Original Song thing. I like just about all of them. Hee, another one for RotK! I still think this song is easy, but it's gorgeous nonetheless. Good lord, Fran Walsh should let the movie makeup people do her hair. Eep.

Ok, people have pronounced Charlize Theron's name about fifteen different ways tonight. Sheesh, you'd think they'd work these things out beforehand.

Yay, another award for M&C!! And the Cinematography award, wow. I'm so happy they didn't get shut out tonight.

And there's Best Adapted Screenplay for RotK! It's not a sweep (and I'm glad of that) but we're really racking up. Ah, and Billy's back. Must've been in the john.

Ooh, thank god Peter Jackson got Best Director!! Squee! After two years of being overlooked, he really deserved it this time round. Such an epic achievement. Aw, and his speech was lovely. Hee! And Crystal made a shoes joke.

Aw, Charlize Theron is so cute and sweet up there. More tears!

Ack, Best Actor...JohnnyJohnnyJohnny, please? I'd really love for him to win, just b/c it'd be unique and he did such an amazing job. And if he doesn't, then Bill Murray. Eee, the tension...ah, shit. Sean Penn. Grr. He got a standing ovation, too. Dude.

Eep, and now for best movie. God, I'm nervous. Surely they won't pass over LOTR yet again. And yet, I hate that it has to be up against M&C...

YES!!! RotK! Wow, 11 awards. That's so amazing. What a wonderful conclusion to the trilogy, especially for fantasy movies. Wow.

Now for sleep :) Very tired now. Happy Leap Day everyone!

A Mighty Wind is a wonderfully hysterical mockumentary about a reunion show for 60s folk musicians by the ensemble who brought us Best In Show and Waiting For Guffman. I highly recommend it.

Have to agree about Annie Lennox's performance. Honestly? Of the songs nominated, I was rooting for either "My Ain True Love" from Cold Mountain or the piece from Triplets of Belleville. Nothing against ROTK, but I just didn't find the song all that interesting or moving.

Oh, cool! I loved Best in Show. Will certainly go find this movie and rent it.

The thing is, when I first heard "Into the West" at the end of RotK, I loved it. I was all caught up in the emotion of the movie, and the song just added to it. Upon repeated listenings, I still like it, but it's not really an amazing song on its own merits. Very small range, and it's rather easy to sing if you've got enough power and clarity.

Some thing about some of the songs from Cold Mountain, though. Simple, easy songs to sing, especially if you have that clear type of voice. For creativity, I was more impressed with "Belleville-Rendezvous"

Thanks for the recap

I enjoyed reading your recap. I can't bear watching awards shows. Too torturous to have to look at celebrities I can't stand. I'm glad RotK won so many, despite my opinion that FoTR was a much better installment. We were busy playing Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance on the PS2 during the oscars. Hacked a ton of lizard men to bit who had a striking (and gratifying) resemblance to Sean Penn.

Yeah, much of these shows is rather annoying, especially when they focus on the "big names" instead of the people actually nominated (urgh, so tired of some of those actors). I'm sort of looking at it like these awards are for the entire trilogy that they just waited until the last movie to recognize.

Sounds like you had a fun night too, though. Hope you won :)
