Merlin 4x06 - A Servant of Two Masters

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Seriously, I can't squee enough. Not only did I get one of my favorite tropes ever (mind control/sickness/etc causes one half of bestfriendship to try to kill the other half), but it was an awesome episode in general! I like this Lucy Watkins, give her more eps to write!

I can't say enough about the first part of the episode. Merlin is wounded b/c he was distracted by keeping Arthur safe. Arthur sees him lying there and HIS FACE OMG. Then they're separated from the Knights (who knows, don't care, it gave us these next scenes) and Arthur carries him. At first it's the usual gentle teasing about Merlin being a coward but then Arthur gives that up completely and tells him the truth. How brave and loyal and generally wonderful Merlin is. No joking, just honesty. I have to go and watch that scene a million times now.

I love seeing Morgana truly have a skilled command of magic now, especially compared to last season. Merlin got some nice defiant taunting in, but once the femora came out, he was honestly scared of it and of Morgana. He also looked quite pretty hanging there all wet...

When I saw Merlin rolling around on the forest floor all covered in muck, I just knew there would be jokes and eye-rolling when Arthur found him but I was happily VERY WRONG. WE GOT A HUG!! One of those wonderful "I'm so happy to see you!" hugs. Instead of doing the usual thing where Guy A goes to hug Guy B but then decides not to because Guy B is naked/dirty/smelly/etc thing, Arthur totally ignored the muck and hugged him anyway. So much squee I could burst!

The rest of the ep was mostly silliness b/c Merlin makes such a terrible assassin. Though it does go to show just how much Arthur and the Knights trust Merlin. Leon waves off an outright statement of intent to kill the king, thinking it a joke, and Arthur doesn't notice crossbow bolts, suspicious bath water, or unconscious servants lying on the floor b/c this is what is normal for them once again. The things that must go on in Arthur's bedchambers on a regular basis...

Old!Merlin thwarting the Knights was awesome and hilarious. He lets that cranky old personality take over so much and obviously has tons of fun poking at his friends when he knows they can't touch him. His little Step-Stool of Knights had me rolling.

Agravaine surprised me a bit by looking honestly upset (to the point of tears) at the thought of Morgana being hurt or dead. Still no explanation for his true motivations, though. I'm very sad that Arthur would even for one minute take Agravaine's word over Gaius's, but it looks like that will be dealt with next week. Speaking of Gaius, it amuses me so much that even when told not to mention the tavern as an excuse for Merlin's absence, he still can't help giving that exact excuse. The tavern seems to be this season's running joke, which makes me wonder if we'll ever actually see the tavern. I can just see Arthur going to haul a tipsy Merlin out of the tavern, all the while Merlin protesting that no, really, he's not always in there. Heh. I wouldn't be surprised. This whole ep was like fanfic, so I will be surprised at nothing after this.

So much fun!!! I really enjoyed the silliness combined with all the scenes showing real affection between the characters, both between Arthur and Merlin, and the way Gwen and Gaius protected Merlin.

The muddy hug really surprised me too, I assumed Arthur would joke about it and step away but instead it was one of the best hugs ever!!

Arthur's scene with the new manservant was hilarious - as is the word "manservant", because I am twelve.

His new manservant (George?) was totally a Jeeves!
