Sci-Fi Friday part two - SGA
Okay, so I felt like writing up my thoughts after all.
DH continues to rock like a rock-like rocking thing. The traditional high-pitched scream (not as impressive as the ones from Nothing, but still good) and the "That did NOT just happen!!" = love.
I'm going to ignore all the slashy squee from all the McSheppers about Shep supporting Rodney to the gate b/c dude, look at them. There's a good foot of space between them. I think it would've amused me more if Ronon had just tossed Rodney over his shoulder and took off for the gate, Rodney complaining all the way. But then I suppose the rest of them wouldn't have been captured, so oh well.
...that opening shot after the teaser, with Ronon standing there in those leather chaps? Whoa, hot. More ass shots like that, please.
Oh lord, I'm sure that's totally the wrong reaction to a proper dose of morphine, but I'll handwave it if only b/c it gives us this sort of acting from teh Hewlett. "A pretty girl and a caveman" indeed. Hee!
Ronon, you wonderful caveman, you. If this is what we get when you get an ep focused on you, then I say we should have more of it.
Dude, that's weird. Shouldn't we have a Wraith Queen, instead of a male one who looks like he's got mange?
Y'know, for a second there, with Ronon running through the abandoned city with all the camera angles and such, it was almost like watching BSG, like the first season with Helo running through Caprica. Then I remembered this is Stargate and had a weird double-take.
Also, that was a KICK-ASS fight scene. Ronon is so damn cool. Seriously, we need more storylines about him, b/c suddenly the direction, editing, and music all got better in this ep. The flashbacks, the music? All reminiscent of BSG all of a sudden - someone's been watching and taking notes.
I do wish they'd gotten a better actress for Ronon's wife, though. Someone a bit more feisty, not to mention less whiney, and surely there are more non-white actors in Vancouver than this.
Damn it. It was awkward and Teyla had to supply most of the words, but that confession about family almost made me like Sheppard. Almost. As a person, if not a commander.
Ha! Rodney with his pants down on the table cracked me up, and those are some spiffy, spiffy boxers. The conversation between Carson and Rodney was really good, too, can we have more of that? It was just getting really interesting and then they cut away. But I'm glad everyone on the show recognizes the chemistry b/w Paul and David and are encouraging it on screen as much as possible. Finally, writers who understand when they've struck comedy gold and let that play out instead of forcing interactions that don't work (Enterprise writers, I'm thinking of you, here).
OMG, I'm so in love with this episode. Ronon's refusal to go, Teyla and Sheppard staying with him, Carson and Rodney arguing over who gets to go help and ultimately being too late anyway...priceless. Then the HUG! I need icons.
Favorite ep of the season, hands down. I'm finally feeling the SGA love again.

It is. It's also the wrong reaction to an improper dose. I am also highly annoyed that the writer decided to have Carson admit to using too much morphine merely because of Rodney's bitching. It makes Carson look like a jerk. And incompetent. And potentially dangerous. The way he's written in this episode, I wouldn't let him treat me for a hang nail.

Yeah, that bothered me, because it's inconsistent with everything we've seen of Wraith society. Which, granted, isn't much, but still. I guess the writer felt it wouldn't seem dangerous enough if Ronon's nemesis was female. Or something.
What You Said about parts of this ep looking like Cylon Occupied Caprica. Even the non-Sateda scenes were filmed in a different style than what I'm accustomed to from SGA. Which I liked, a lot.
I actually kind of liked Ronon's wife/girlfriend/SO. Yeah, I would have been happier if she hadn't been white, but even so, I liked the fact that she was just ... normal. She wasn't some too-skinny, hyper-pretty wannabe model type, she looked and behaved like an average person. Not the best actress in the world, granted, but adequate for the role.

Thought so. If Rodney had been actively preventing his own treatment then fine, I could see the urge to sedate him, but this...yeah. Exactly what we've come to expect from the writers, though.

Man, I hope that wasn't their reasoning. Watching Ronon take on a Wraith Queen one-on-one would have been just as cool.

I liked it, too. Whoever this director was, I hope they bring him back more often.

Exactly. I hate it when the writers go for the cheap laugh at the expense of the character. Hell, half of my reasons for disliking Carson is based on the fact the writers won't let him be competent--or, rather, that they will make him suddenly forget all of his training and be grossly incompetent because they're too lazy to come up with a better plot device. Like in "Instinct" when they have him leave a dangerous viral agent unattended and unsecured when he should damned well know better.
Lazy, sloppy writing. Makes my head huuuurt.

Hell, it would have been more cool. Because, really? The Queen should be the biggest, badest Wraith in the whole damned Hive.

And I was totally curled up in the corner of the couch, laughing hsyterically and shouting, "He got shot in the ass! He got shot in the ass!" I'm so sorry, Rodney, I really am.
This was a really good Sheppard episode, actually, I thought. That scene where he was with Rodney (who was lying down) and *not* being totally snarky? That was awesome, as was the scene with Teyla.
And while I will always enjoy irritated Carson, I still don't know how I feel about him with the gun and wanting to shoot Wraith. But, like I said elsewhere, I think I just like my heroes to dislike guns. Some of 'em, anyway. (Ronon can get away with it because it's eye candy. I never said I wasn't shallow.)

I was a bit surprised about that as well. I'm just going to assume he only wanted to help out against the bad odds and not b/c he wanted to shoot anything.
Or maybe he wanted to impress Rodney ;)
