Sci-Fi Friday - SG premieres

Omg, just watching the teaser got me all bouncy again with excitement for this series. I love my show. I've missed my show.

Claudia has gotten a lot of practice lately with childbirth scenes. Heh.

New credits! Just a few slight alterations, mostly to fit Claudia in there. Looks good.

Daniel still on board? Feh. C'mon, do they honestly think we're going to worry at this point?

I just love how hard they got their asses kicked. No quick fixes yet, only lots of casualties and an enemy they can't outshoot. Nice.

Well, that was fast. I'm getting so many Hope flashbacks from Xena, and I hope (no pun intended) this won't be too similar. The rapidly-aging-child-of-destiny needs a new twist.

Whoa, her eyes are yellow. That's nifty looking, but creepy.

*dies* The shot of that massive ship coming towards Sam, floating in space like she is, so small...that cracked me up. That was probably completely and utterly scientifically impossible, but it was still cool. Heh.

Y'know, this might be the first time we've seen SG-1 saving themselves in a last ditch attempt to get away instead of staying behind with everyone else. Cameron did it when he escaped in the 302 and Daniel did it by ringing away at the last minute leaving everyone else to blow up with the ship. Not saying it's bad, it's just...different. And does that mean Chekov actually died? I want to think he was one of the six survivors, b/c he's been a recurring character for ages and I'd miss him.

Okay, pausing briefly here to say I really hate those little adverts Sci-Fi is putting up during the show. They're large and intrusive and annoying, and even the one with Rodney in it irritated me. Stop doing that!

Loved Landry's dig at Woolsey and government salaries.

Ahhh, I see from the guards' armor just how Daniel ends up in that outfit we've seen in the spoiler pics. Whee!

If this ep is indicative of what we can expect from Daniel and Vala this season, I'm so totally on board. I'd missed them and their banter and the faces Daniel makes at what she says.

Man, first Abydos and now Chulak. They should stop destroying our main characters' ties to home. Still, I liked Sam's faith that Daniel was still out there; Jack would be proud, she's finally caught on ;)

Y'know, many of us have been saying this for years, but despite the AU ubergeek!Daniel from Moebius and his near-blindness, our Daniel must have only slight near-sightedness, b/c there's no way his eyes could be that bad if he's running around with no glasses all the time while shooting things. I mean, if I didn't have my glasses? I couldn't see the targets, let alone shoot them. So either they're not that bad or we have to handwave a LOT of stuff over the seasons.

Then again, I suppose we're used to the handwaving, so...*shrug*

OMG, how much do I love that Daniel's first reaction is to shoot Adria? My, he's turned into quite the practical-minded soldier, hasn't he. I wish Jack could be here to see this. It's just like the whole Son of Anubis thing all over again, isn't it?

I love love LOVED the team scene at the end. All five of them agreeing to change some tactics, get up a new game plan, and keep fighting. God, I'm so looking forward to this season. *rejoices in the resurgence of lost fannish squee*

So, the teaser is just to remind us how stupid these people are, right? Just checking. B/c I hadn't forgotten.

Wow, is that a female pilot? About damn time. One day I suppose we'll stop being surprised when we see these things.

I'm glad they immediately show us Shep of course isn't "just gone", but damn, how cool would it have been if he had been. Especially as he survived in such an implausible fashion. Ahem, sorry, will try to refrain from bashing.

Man, Mitch looked almost old in that scene with Weir. With that and this suicide mission she's sending him on, I'm betting he's a marked man sooner or later. Which sucks, b/c I like him. Atlantis needs a military leader with more common sense than Sheppard.

Can we have more of McKay and Ronon bickering? I like them. McKay and his porn music downloading and his insistence on being the one responsible for destroying Earth and Ronon's agreement with him. Love.

Aaaaaand, more affirmation that Shepwhore deserves his moniker. How long before we get the Very Special Episode about Space Syphilis?

YAAAAY, Michael!! Connor continues to rock so hard on this show. Also, hearing the Wraith Queen spit out the name "Michael" just makes me infinitely more glad they chose that name over the original "Charlie". Putting aside the other implications that name brings to the Gateverse, and the oddness of Connor playing yet another character with that name, it would've sounded rather silly in this context.

Another yay for putting Teyla in charge. Maybe some rational decisions will be made around that place, finally.

McKay and Ronon are comedy gold. They're honestly the only entertaining thing about this ep apart from Michael.

I wish they'd stop teasing us with Shep's demise. It's cruel for those of us who long for it, that is.

Aw, Zelenka and Lorne and Orion! *loves* Sad that they lost that ship after only just recently acquiring it.

I laughed at the DOS joke.

It saved them, but turning an entire ship of Wraith into humans (and blank ones at that) still creeps me out.

Kinda meh about this one. Loved sections of it, was bored to tears by other bits, and an annoying lack of Carson with minimal Teyla. Still, looking forward to the rest of the season. Especially if Michael continues to play such an important role.

Oh, no kidding! How many times has this been done now? And has it ever actually been done well?

Probably not, it's a horrible idea no matter who's writing it.

*dies* The shot of that massive ship coming towards Sam, floating in space like she is, so small...that cracked me up. That was probably completely and utterly scientifically impossible, but it was still cool. Heh.

Yeah, I am so not going to touch all the ways in which Sam should have been flattened into a little gritty paste in that bit, but it was a neat concept.

I am vastly amused by the differences in our reactions to the SG:A premiere. I really like Sheppard, but I do agree he has no business being even nominally in charge of the Atlantis military. Of course, I also think that Elizabeth has no business being in charge of Atlantis, either, and the pair of them just make my head hurt with their utter idiocy.

Caldwell, otoh, totally rocks. Of course, it helps that I've been a huuuge fan of Mitch Pileggi from his X-Files days. He just does solid, quiet competence so well, and that's something that Atlantis needs desperately.

It saved them, but turning an entire ship of Wraith into humans (and blank ones at that) still creeps me out.

Yeah, no kidding, though I'm glad to see from the teaser for next week that Carson is finally showing signs of an actual conscience about the whole virus thing because, dammit, somebody needed to. It always appalled me how quickly the whole senior staff fell into line about using biological weapons, with no-one voicing even the slightest ethical objection. Hell, forget ethics, what about sheer practicality? Viruses mutate, it's in their job description, and this sucker's airborne to begin with. Someone should have at least had reservations about it, if only for their own personal safety.

If it has, I've never seen it. I wonder who did it first, and if it was actually cool then.

I'll agree with you there. They're really not the ones who should be in charge, and I don't feel Shep has any business being in Atlantis at all. I've never liked this sort of "bucking authority" type, but there's something about Sheppard that...yeah. Ugh.

Same here! Colonel Skinner was just what they needed.

ITA. The entire thing is shady so I'm glad to see Carson will be saying something. I think he finally got a clue when that Wraith Queen fed on the Wraith-turned-human a few eps back.

You should find this amusing, then. It's the start of a silly!fic I started in protest over all the Shep badfic out there. It pretty much sums up what I think of John's character:

Once upon a time, in the lost city of Atlantis, there lived an Air Force Major named John Sheppard.

John was rather tall for a pilot. He was not, however, particularly skinny and did, in fact, have an ass. He had brown hair that he spent about as much time on as any other military officer while under threat of eminent attack from life-sucking aliens, which is to say, not much. His eyes were plain, ordinary brown.

As a pilot, John's job should have been providing transportation and air support to Atlantis personnel. Instead, he found himself in charge of a reconnaissance team whose job was to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no Air Force officer with automatic weapons and absolutely no training in first contact protocol had gone before.

Of course, his superiors really shouldn't have been all that surprised when most of his missions turned into complete clusterfucks.

I do like the guy, when the writers let him be more than just a bad Han Solo clone. John should be less of a rake and more of a dork. That's when I like John the best, when the actor manages to let his Inner Dweeb shine. And don't get me started on Carson! I hatehateHATE what the writers do with him, because it directly contradicts how the actor plays him. This is a guy who makes you tea and natters about the snails in his mum's garden, he doesn't whip up deadly biological agents without even a thought to the consequences.

*dies SO much* Please tell me you'll be writing more of this? It's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

And I so agree about Carson. I love him to bits, but really, there's such a strange dichotomy there. He reminds me of Leonard of Quirm from the Discworld novels - all that innocence, would never harm a fly, but his brain comes up with the scariest things imaginable.

Hee! Thanks. And there is a bit more, but I wasn't sure you'd be interested as it's mainly a McShep parody and I know that's not your thang. *g*

Oh, and you might want to check out my SG:A Sims 2 Theatre stuff over in [livejournal.com profile] ophidiae. Yeah, it's mainly McShep, but it's also totally a badfic satire. The sad thing? Most of the people reading it don't get that it's a parody. I mean, I had Mary Sue princesses who turned into Cthuluhian monsters, ferchrissake! How much more obvious do I need to be?

Re Carson. This is a common problem when you have multiple writers for a show and no-one bothering to check for character continuity. All manner of paradoxical contradictions creep in, because it's all done in the name of plot demands rather than character growth.

[identity profile] castalianspring.livejournal.com 2006-07-15 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah well, I'll scan them and just try to ignore the McShep bits ;P

In this fandom? Pretty damn obvious. The crackfic is just scary.

I suppose we should be used to the character continuity problems; after all, these are the same people who brought us SG-1. Character continuity is usually an accident. *g*

Yeah, no kidding. o.O

You may or may not like the Theatre, as the recent story arc is fairly John-centric. OTOH, I use every available opportunity to completely and utterly humiliate him, so YMMV. ;)

As is anything resembling actual military protocol. *g*

I have actual responses, but before I forget, [livejournal.com profile] fmith pointed this (http://helenish.livejournal.com/141006.html) out to me and I thought you would get a kick out of it.

*dies laughing* Oh, that's priceless. Thanks for the link!

[actual response]

Y'know, this might be the first time we've seen SG-1 saving themselves in a last ditch attempt to get away instead of staying behind with everyone else. Cameron did it when he escaped in the 302 and Daniel did it by ringing away at the last minute leaving everyone else to blow up with the ship. Not saying it's bad, it's just...different.

I definitely thought of this, too! Actually, I didn't really think of it with Cameron, but when Daniel ringed away without trying to get as many people into the rings with him as he could, I thought, 'What a different Daniel we have gotten over the years...'

I have been catching up on Farscape; accordingly, I kept thinking of Ben as Crichton and wondering why he wasn't going around the ship and helping to fix things. I had to place him back into Cameron.

YAAAAY, Michael!! Connor continues to rock so hard on this show.

Ahh, the whole beginning of the episode, I kept saying, "But where's Connor?! I wanna see Connor." I really enjoy him as Michael. Then, I saw him in various other guest spots so I finally checked out Enterprise, and I may be watching it for him.

Nonetheless, I still enjoy the whole Michael character and the story, or rather, the ramifications. Also, hearing the Wraith Queen spit out the name "Michael" -Oh yeah, that too, was wonderful. Even though I was yelling at the television at their Michael decisions, I think I'm enjoying seeing what's becoming of him, now.

And Connor, too.
