Yuletide, whee!!!

I'm back, home again after spending Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and part of this morning with [livejournal.com profile] flamange and her mother, who were extremely generous in sharing their home, their company, and most importantly their Christmas dinner with me. I enjoyed myself very much indeed. New friends for the holidays, the best Christmas goose I've ever had, and plenty of time to sleep in and laze around chatting and watching old movies (among them being Harvey, True Grit, The Philadelphia Story, That's Entertainment!, The Life Aquatic, and Under the Greenwood Tree - nice mix, eh?). There was also Dr Who, for which I have discovered a mad, mad love. Ten is shiny and wanted to be ginger and for that alone I would love him. <3 <3 <3 <3

Took me about 8 hours to make it home by bus, mostly b/c I had to switch buses twice, and b/c they always take the long way round. Still, it's cheaper than the train, and it gave me the chance to see a few more towns, such as Chester, Rhyl and Llandudno.

Of course, now that I'm home I've immediately hopped online to devour more [livejournal.com profile] yuletide stories. A whopping 456 stories this year, too. I think of that essay I should be writing, and all the other reading I should be doing, and yet those responsibilities are so easily squashed by the prospect of so many stories. I'm reduced to a gibbering "omg, gimme!" status.

Here are some preliminary recs of stories I've read and loved so far...

In Which a New Child Comes to the Forest, AA Milne - Winnie the Pooh (book), G. Lovely, simply lovely. A grown-up Christopher with his own son, and a new yet familiar way of telling stories.

Tale on a Winter's Eve, The African Queen, G. I love this movie, and the story is a wonderful afterword. Comforting as a cup of tea.

Ride Home, Alien Nation, PG-13. "At times like these, there was no pleasing the human.". Matt and George, doing their partner thing. A very pleasant surprise, b/c I didn't think AN would count as a rare fandom as it had a very healthy zine life. <3

The Art of Godfathering, Alien Nation, G. Not one, but two AN stories this year. I love the sense of family in this one.

Right Time, Right Place, The American President, PG. Because in true Aaron Sorkin fashion, every president needs a best friend who he trusts more than anything and who is a lot smarter than him. Andy has AJ.

In the Hour Before Dawn, Band of Brothers, PG. A powerful post-war story, where Winters is in a sort of limbo. As always, Nix is with him.

Trousers, Blackadder, PG. So good I wish it had been an episode. So in character it could have been an episode. Some lovely playing with language here.

Transmogrification, Calvin and Hobbes, R. OMG. There are no words. Was iffy on this, but the ending...YES.

First Day Family, Darkwing Duck, G. Someone wrote Darkwing Duck fic!!!!! *dies of squee*

Questioning, Dogma, PG-13. Nice fic set after the movie.

The Running of the Deer, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, G. I love pre-book Ford and Arthur.

Arthur and Ford's Excellent Misadventure, HHGTTG, PG. Ford and Arthur during the books are quite nice, too.

It Was That Sort of Day, The Long, Dark Teatime of the Soul, PG. Dirk Gently fic!! Quirky and cute and I love the style.

Stranger Than, Galaxy Quest, G. I love all the fannish in-jokes.

Home to Peace, I Spy, NC-17. Scott/Kelly, and family. Doesn't get any better than that.

Billy Brennan, Prince of Humbugs, Jurassic Park III, R. Post-movie, and absolutely perfect. Billy, Alan, Ellie, everyone's there and it's so very right.

And I Shall Be Healed, Chronicles of the Deryni, PG. It's not Denis and Thomas, but it's damn good. Poor Derry.

I've made it through to the Ls, so I suppose that's as good a place as any to stop. More recs will follow once I get some sleep before wading back into the stories. God, I love Yuletide.

In other secret santa news, [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa disappointed me in that there was only one Beckett/McKay fic among the masses, but this Lorne/Parrish fic helped soothe the wound a bit.

Thanks so much for the kind rec of my story (it's the first rec that I've actually seen anywhere for it); so glad you enjoyed it.

As well, thanks for the lovely Welsh Christmas card that arrived just this morning!

Ah, sneaky little anonymouse. I have an idea who you might be, though. And you're very welcome!

I appreciate the recs. Generally I don't get around to seeking out fic beyond what gets posted in the comms I belong to. But now I can download stories I like and put them on my new Zire to read when I'm out and about so I'm a bit more motivated to do some wider reading. :-)

Ooh, neat little toy. Hope you enjoy the wider reading!

So this is a (very)belated hey and glad you made it back to Bangor safe. :) But wow... 8 hours? Really? That sounds like a nightmare-- especially if the buses were anything like they normally are.

I only wish you could've seen more when you were here. I don't think you even got to see the center of Heswall, did you?

So those are the Yuletide fics.

Hey! Glad to hear you're feeling better and not so mumps-ridden.

Whoops, the 8 hours is a typo. I meant I got home around 8, so the trip was more like 5 hours. But it wasn't too bad, and I didn't have to wait too long when I was changing buses.

Hee, yeah, those are the Yuletide fics. We had a great turnout this year, over 400 stories! :)
