Another music post.
B/c I'm avoiding work, you get more music. As with the previous post of music, let me know if any of the links run out and I'll re-up them.
The Divine Comedy
My friend Hannah turned me on to The Divine Comedy - a Northern Irish pop band - and I fell instantly in love with Neil Hannon (the only member of the band to be constantly in the band) and his voice. You might have heard him in the theme music for the Father Ted series and more recently in the Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy score with Joby Talbot. Their music has a very unique sound to me, feeling a bit outside the usual genres, and it took some getting used to at first.
The Booklovers - For literary geeks. A pretty melody in the chorus, but it's the amusing comments after the authors are named that really gives me the giggles. Except the Nabokov quote, which makes me go "ew!".
Absent Friends - Title song from my favorite Divine Comedy album. References to Steve McQueen and Oscar Wilde in the same song, how cool is that?
Come Home Billy Bird - Probably my favorite of the bunch. There's just something about the chorus and background vocals that I adore. I also get such an amusing mental picture at the lyrics dealing with flight attendant taking away Billy's baggage - "please let go...thank you, sir".
The Wreck of the Beautiful - Absolutely gorgeous. You know I like anything that has to deal with ships and this is no exception.
The Happy Goth - I always think of Abby from NCIS when I listen to this song.
Our Mutual Friend - I'm always impressed by the orchestration of TDC songs, and this is no exception. I love the moment at the beginning where the drums and bass kick in.
Richard Shindell, Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky
I love these three whether they're singing separately, in pairs or all together as the group "Cry Cry Cry". Folky story songs with some of the most beautiful guitar work I've ever heard.
Darkness, Darkness by Richard Shindell - Heard it first on
gwyn_r's Miracles vid, and fell so very in love. One of my favorite songs ever.
You Stay Here by Richard Shindell - Could be any war, any conflict. Stark, gorgeous imagery.
Confession by Richard Shindell - More lovely guitar work, and I love how the song isn't what it seems.
Waiting for the Storm - Another of my favorites. Makes me think of hurricane season now.
Shades of Gray by Cry Cry Cry - These three people are simply magic when they get together. Guitars!
Cold Missouri Waters by Cry Cry Cry - I love this song. So sad but so very beautiful.
By Way of Sorrow by Cry Cry Cry - Lucy Kaplansky does the lead vocals on this and it's just gorgeous. The lyrics are bittersweet and uplifting.
Are You Out There by Dar Williams - The driving energy of this song makes it so much fun to sing along. One of my favorite solo pieces by Dar Williams.
Jason Falkner
Another singer who can't seem to stay with the same people, but it hasn't seemed to hurt him. My buddy Omar introduced me to his music when he gave me a mix entitled "Songs for an Evil Little Redhead". Omar has notoriously odd and obscure taste in music, but occasionally we share such taste. The following are some of his most recent songs.
They Put Her in the Movies
Feeling No Pain
Lost Myself
Misc.
Hallelujah by John Cale - There are a million and one covers for this song and I think I have almost all of them except, oddly enough, the original). Most of the attention these days goes to the Jeff Buckley cover (which I don't really like, sorry) and the Rufus Wainwright version (which I do really like). But the John Cale version remains my favorite, though it's damn hard to find anywhere. There was lots of confusion about this song when the Shrek movie came out, b/c although the version you hear in the film is actually the John Cale cover, the Rufus Wainwright cover ended up on the Shrek Soundtrack cd. Go figure. This one is still the best :P
Cry (If You Want To) by The Holly Cole Trio - Holly Cole has this wonderfully low, smoky voice that lends itself perfectly to old school jazz. I really love the rhythms in this one.
The Tennessee Waltz by The Holly Cole Trio - I never cared much for this song until I heard Holly Cole sing it.
Cosmonaut Petrov by the Red Elvises - Another song courtesy of Omar. The Red Elvises are a Russian surf band. Yes, you read that right. I freakin' adore this song.
Coney Island by The Lascivious Biddies - This is Omar music day, it seems. This is a lovely group of women who sing the most charming period songs in very pretty harmony. I love to sing along to this one.
The Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash - Probably my favorite Johnny Cash song. Definite religious overtones, but I'd love to see it vidded to a western.
Homecoming (Walter's Song) by Vienna Teng - Vienna Teng is one of my relatively recent discoveries, thanks to
audiography. "Gravity" gets played the most often, but while I do love that song, this one is my favorite.
The Center of the Sun by Poe - One of my favorite Poe songs to round it out to a nice 25 songs. Eerie and beautiful, like many of her songs.
Again, let me know if any of the links run out. And I'd love to hear what people think of these. *can talk about music all day*
