Sci-Fi Weekend.

Torrents are slow today, so still waiting for this week's BSG, but here are some thoughts on the Stargate side of fannishness...

I know I saw this when it was a ST: Voyager episode, but at least they did give it a bit of a twist.

Like most everyone else, I also had Farscape flashbacks due to seeing Ben Browder strapped into a reclining chair, twitching while someone fiddled with his memories.

This ep continues with the parade of recognizable guest stars. Firstly, Megan! She hasn't changed much since The Sentinel, really.

Second of all, Walter Peck was on Stargate. O.o I kept expecting him to be the one who killed her, just b/c hey, it's Walter Peck! He's a baddie! Maybe he's just too dickless to do it ;)

Daniel's expression when he was all "oh, diplomacy, is that what you were doing" made me laugh. After all, he should know better than most (no one knows this better than Jack O'Neill) that you don't get involved with alien women, even if it's only flirtation, b/c it leads to nothing but trouble/rapid aging/sarcophagus addiction/insert complication of choice here. Hell, even Harry Kim knows that at the very least, you can get alien VD.

Didn't expect it to be the ex-husband, mostly b/c I don't think it all made quite enough sense, but kudos to them for not going the route of "oh yeah, the military killed the civilian to make her shut up". Nice use of a red herring, there. I was also quite pleased by the darker ending, where the scientist gets his memory wiped and just goes back to work, all b/c Peck thinks that's best for the project everyone. Not your usual outcome.

The memory device was a convenient enough excuse for us to get more backstory on Mitchell than we have on most of our other characters. More info for him in one episode than we've gotten for others (Sam, especially) in 9 seasons. I'm glad we got more evidence that Cam and Sam (*snerk*) are friends, and that she learned a bit more about him, but then I was disappointed that none of them know what the whole bombing-the-refugees thing was all about. Honestly, if I were Mitchell, I'd want them to know the details rather than letting them imagine all sorts of things that could have the same emotional signature as killing-an-innocent-woman-with-a-blunt-instrument. SG-1 needs to sit down and have a little chat, methinks.

Loved the scenes with Mitchell and his dad, though that, too, is a bit reminiscent of Farscape. BB does dad scenes well. At least his mom didn't show up in a whirlwind of Oedipal innuendo this time.

So far I've liked both the new eps, though I seem to be in a small minority about "The Fourth Horseman, part Two". Nevertheless, I did enjoy last week's Jaffa stuff, Cam's Jaffa boyfriend, Louis Gossett Jr buggering off to do things more worthy of his Oscar-ness, and the father-daughter stuff b/w Lam and Landry (I can relate to it, so it gets to me. I like it, so there.).

Let's see, how far behind am I on SGA...ah, most of the season, yes. Shut up.

Ok, where to start. Enjoyed most of The Hive, especially the nicely slashy bits b/w Beckett and McKay. I am such a sucker for canon bedside vigils, oh yes. I still miss Ford.

Epiphany - mostly yawn. As [livejournal.com profile] greensilver pointed out, they got the math wrong, so the whole sense of urgency was a bit fabricated. I did enjoy Teyla's quiet competence, McKay's Malp Onna Stick, and Ronon in general.

Critical Mass - I had so many issues with this one, and got into it far too much in other people's journals, so I'm not really gonna touch it. I will go on record as saying I liked Teyla's song, despite my usual musician pickiness. Luttrell has a very pleasant voice, very clear. It's a similar style to songs I prefer singing myself, so I'll overlook the dorky dress b/c I think the orchestration was lovely. In the meantime I'll be over here waiting for Kavanagh's litigation against Weir and Sheppard.

Grace Under Pressure - Mostly a chance to stick DH in a box and let him act. He acted circles around Tapping (though honestly, that's not hard to do IMO) but she did a good job playing Not-Really-Sam. I was so disappointed in the "sea monster", though. A whale is so unimaginative.

The Tower - PENDRELL!!! Otherwise forgettable.

The Long Goodbye - Nice chance for Torri to do something. But my favorite bits were actually Teyla and Ronon, who are quickly becoming my preferred little subplot duo. I like that Teyla was willing to shoot him if it meant saving the whole city.

Coup D'Etat - I like Ladon, so I was quite amused that he played them all so well, despite all of Weir and Sheppard's little attempts to be clever and play both sides. I'll miss Cowen, though, but only b/c it's Colm Meany. Again, Teyla and Ronon's subplot was amusing, especially Ronon's "Death Cuddle!" method of getting information. Perhaps it's his breath that does them in. Was also nice to see Carson saving the day with medical expertise. McKay's attempt at military codetalk was giggle-inducing.

More on BSG when this damn torrent finally finishes.
