Long overdue music post.
I've been meaning to post some of my favorite music for a while now, and this is as good a time as any, especially since term starts back next Monday (insert long, put-upon sigh here). You'll find some choice weirdness behind the cuts.
The Decemberists
I'll start with what may be my most favorite band ever. There is nothing by these guys that I don't love. They have a very unique sound, with almost a timeless feel to them, and every single song tells a story. They're usually classed as "indie rock" or even "literary pop" by critics. Lead singer Colin Meloy has one of the most recognizably individual voices I've ever heard.
Eli, the Barrowboy - Vying for position of my favorite, this song has a beautiful, melancholy sound backed by simple guitars.
The Infanta - Another favorite. I love the exotic sound of this one and the striking imagery evoked by the lyrics. The vocabulary is enough to make one weep with joy.
Shanty for the Arethusa - Mmm, creepy. "The ghosts of sailors pass, their spectral bodies clinging to the shrouds".
The Bagman's Gambit - This was a surprise favorite. Another simple setting, until the chorus kicks in and then it's just awesome. "No, they'll never catch me now..."
The Mariner's Revenge Song - Bwahaha! God, I love this one. An epic romp of craziness and messed up tales of revenge.
Leslie Anne Levine - This one's a bit hard to describe. It's sad and tragic yet hauntingly beautiful.
Ookla the Mok
Another of my all-time favorite bands. A filk band, which makes them a bit rough at times but they're so much fun to listen to. Music for geeks.
Rishathra - In the Trekverse, "rishathra" means interspecies sex.
Dollar Fifty Movies - OTM sings about that integral part of society, the $1.50 movie theatres.
Haydn Seek - Not terribly fannish, but it's pretty. And weird. And, dude, just look at the title.
Arthur Curry - Aquaman, his lack of coolness, and his envy of Batman.
Das Uber Tuber - Seriously, only Rand and Adam would write a song about Mr Potato Head.
Tommy - Shoutout to all tv spinoffs and sequels that sucked. "Everything good turns to crap."
Mr Worf - *snicker snort* Just listen. Honest.
Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer
I was introduced to this singer/songwriter pair by Melina and Shalott's excellent LOTR vid, "The Mountain". Absolutely gorgeous folk music.
The Mountain - This entire song is a metaphor. I love it to pieces.
When I Go - Absolutely. frakking. gorgeous.
Flight of Dragons/Don McLean
Ok, most people who know me know of my insane love for a 1980s animated movie, The Flight of Dragons. It didn't hit theatres until 1986, but it was actually made in 1982 and released straight to video, and at some point when I was a very small child, someone in my family recorded it on VHS - minus about 10 minutes at the beginning, annoyingly enough, so we had to rent it if we wanted to watch that bit. It's a fascinating combination of two separate books (one "non-fiction" book by Peter Dickinson, The Flight of Dragons, and one fiction novel by Gordon R. Dickson, The Dragon and The George) and has the niftiest "science" behind dragons ever. It's a Rankin/Bass animation and most of the music was composed by their usual guy, Maury Laws, who IMO did his best stuff in this movie. The theme song at the beginning is by Don McLean, but the background music in the song is by Laws, and I think it's gorgeous.
Flight of Dragons - The theme sung by Don McLean, but as an extra long sound clip straight from the movie. Includes the opening lines of the film, where Carolinus (voiced by Harry Morgan) explains pretty much what the movie will be about. I love this music, and just those opening chords are enough to get me all nostalgic.

A Body Goes Down by Duncan Sheik - I first heard this song when![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
greensilver used it in her Daniel Jackson fanmix, and I instantly fell in love with it. The story here is amazing, not to mention the feel of the music itself.
Star Wars by Moosebutter - John Williams IS the man. Heh. Impressive a capella harmony.
Run by Snow Patrol - One of the better known bands in this list, but I love this song.
The Noose by A Perfect Circle - APC has a lot of really great songs, some much more well known than this one, but The Noose is my favorite. For some reason, I think of Stargate when I hear this song.
Tech Support by Jeffrey Hitchin - For something a little different, here's one of the funniest filk songs ever. Supposedly a true story.
Can You Picture That? by The Electric Mayhem - Muppets! I have a ton of this stuff in my collection, but this one remains the most fun.
Skeletons of Quinto by The Folksmen - From A Mighty Wind, a great folk group. This one has a lovely southwestern sound to it.

Ah, dial-up. ...Which I think it just the general problem with "Dollar Fifty Movies", sometimes yousendit files just don't like me, rather, my connection. I couldn't download "Infantra", either. I'll have to see what I can do, Yahoo mail tends to respond better to the woes of dial-up downloads.
